Tobias Griscom, son of Andrew and Sarah (Dole) Griscom, settled on lands inherited from his father at “Newton,” Gloucester county, New Jersey, now in the limits of the city of Camden.[1]
He married Deborah Gabitas. Their intent to marry was recorded in Quaker Meeting Records in 1710 in Burlington, New Jersey.[2]
He died in New Jersey in the winter of 1719-20; his will, dated December 30, 1719, being proven three weeks later, January 21, 20. [3] (The will indicates that they had children but does not name them.[3])
For a copy of Tobias’s original will see p.18-19 in [4] .
Deborah married second on April 13, 1724, Quaker TOBIAS H0LL0WAY,[5] a farmer and apparently a bachelor who had lived in Newton for about ten years.[6] Deborah and Tobias had two children: Deborah Holloway and John Holloway. Deborah died on August 8, 1730.[7] She was 40.
In 1726 Deborah's sister Rebecca Gabitas, who settled in the Alloways Creek area of Salem County in southwestern New Jersey, died single, at about age 37, leaving land in Lincolnshire, England, to Andrew, Tobias, William & Samuel Griscom, sons of Tobias, and to Joseph Dole Jr.[8]
Tobias Holloway married next on March 8, 1732 [1732/3?] Mary (Medcalf) Ladd, daughter of Matthew and Dorothy Medcalf and widow of Samuel Ladd.[9]
