Biography

Guillaume (or Willem) III le bon, [Count of Hainault, Holland and Zeeland, lord of Friesland, 3rd but eldest surviving son and heir, born probably in 1286. She was born about 1294. They had three sons, Jean (or Jan) (died young), Guillaume (or Willem) (IV) [Count of Hainault and Holland], and Louis (or Lodewijk) (died young), and six daughters Sibylla, Marguerite (or Margaretha), PHILIPPE, Jeanne (or Johanna), Agnes, and Isabelle (or Elisabeth). .... GUILLAUME III, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, died at Valenciennes (Nord) 7 (or 8) June 1337, and buried there in the Church of the Franciscans. He left a will dated 22 Feb. 1336, codicil dated 30 May 1337. His widow, Jeanne, became a num at Fontenelles Abbey near Valenciennes in 1337, before 8 Nov. JEANNE OF VALOIS, former Countess of Hainault and Holland, died at Fontenelles Abbey 7 March 1352, and was buried there.

There's a portrait in the City Hall of Haarlem with the inscription:

If Guillaume married Jeanne when he was 19, and died leaving her a widow, then why do we have him listed as married to three other women as well? I understand he had children with mistresses, but maybe they should just be listed in the biography and not as wives? I assume they are linked to the appropriate children.

I find a record of Willem III acknowledging a gift of "3 morgens of land, in the poeldike" from Jan van den Poel to wife Aleid, daughter of Jan Floris:

"1336 september 14 Den Haag Graaf Willem III bevestigt de schenking door Jan van den Poel aan diens echtgenote Aleid, dochter van Jan Florisz., van een lijftocht van drie morgen leengoed in Poeldijk." A: AGH 243 (klein register Noordholland), f. 105v, nr. 620 (primaire registratie).

It makes no mention of Jan (aged perhaps 16, if we accept "ca. 1320") being the son of Willem III

De Avesnes-64 and Hainaut-43 appear to represent the same person because: same person, please merge ... Hainaut is the correct LNAB per MedLands - GUILLAUME de Hainaut. A leader needs to fix the privacy for De Avesnes-64 in order to complete this merge.

Thank you.

Hi Colin,

Could you add more details about this person, please? We are trying to identify he and his wife. Their identities are very similar to a couple who lived in the 13th century and it is causing confusion.

Thank you!

Hainaut-43 and De Avesnes-64 do not represent the same person because: Since their wives are different (rejected merge), they can't be the same person.
De Avesnes-64 and Hainaut-43 appear to represent the same person because: They are both Guillaume III de Hainaut (d'Avesnes) who married Jeanne de Valois - there's only one.
Van Der Poel-104 and Hainaut-43 are not ready to be merged because: What documentation is there for Daniel van der Poel as his son?

Avesnes-82 and Hainaut-43 are not ready to be merged because: Need to decide on the most appropriate LNAB
