Biography

George Halyburton is a member of Haliburton Clan.

George, 3rd Lord Halyburton of Dirletoun succeeded his elder brother Patrick in the Peerage. He had sasine of Ballegarno in 1469. As Lord Halyburton he sat in Parliament from 1st March 1478/9 to 21st March 1484/5. Thereafter he was styled Lord Dirletoun and under that title sat as a Lord of Parliament 1st October 1487 and 11th January 1487/8, as did his successors.[1]

The Crown confirmed, on 18th August 1459, a charter to John de Dalrymple over a third-part of the lands in the barony of Bolton, Haddingtonshire, for a reversionary wadset [mortgage] by George, Lord Dirletoun, for the sum of 1000 merks.[2]

This George is mentioned in a charter dated 7th July 1464, designed therein as son of Janet Seton, Lady Dirletoun. [Nothing in The Great Seal in 1464.]

It is quite possible that both George, Lord Dirletoun, and his son and heir-apparent, Archibald, fell at the Battle of Sauchiburn, 11th June 1488.[3]

His wife's name was Mariote[4] Her surname is unknown - not unusual for this period.

He had issue three sons.

  1. Archibald, Master of Dirletoun.
  2. Patrick, afterwards 5th Lord Direltoun.
  3. Andrew Halyburton.

Research Notes

  • Note: Douglas's 1764 edition of The Peerage of Scotland styled George as 4th Lord Haliburton, counting the creation from Walter Halyburton. The 1907 edition of The Scots' Peerage counts the creation of the title from c.1450 and styled John Halyburton, the son of Walter as 1st Lord Halyburton.
