Biography

Katherine Hamby was the daughter of Robert Hamby, Gent., of Ipswich, Suffolk, and Elizabeth Arnold, daughter of John Arnold. (See research note.) She was baptized on 10 December 1615 at St. Matthew's, Ipswich, Suffolk, with her parents named as Robert and Elizabeth.[1][2][3][4]

Marriage and Children

Katherine and Capt. Edward Hutchinson obtained a marriage license on 19 October 1636 at Lawford, Essex, by which they were married.[1][2]

"Hutchinson, Edward, of Wanfielt, co. Lincoln, mercer, bachelor, 24, and Katherine Hanbie, spinster, 21 and above, consent of her mother, Katherine Hanbie, of Ipswich, Suffolk, alleged by Richard Hutchinson, of St. Mary Magdalen, Milk Street, ironmonger — at Lawford, Essex. 19 Oct, 1636. B."[5][6][7]

Edward, of Boston, Massachusetts, was the son and heir of William Hutchinson by Anne Marbury and was baptized at Alford, Lincolnshire 28 May 1613.[1][2][8] Katherine and Edward had the following children, all born in Boston:

  1. Elishua,[2] baptized 5 November 1637, probably died young (not named in her father's 1675 will)[9]
  2. Elizabeth, wife of Edward Winslow,[2] was born 4 November 1639, died 16 September 1728[9]
  3. Col. Elisha,[2] born 16 November 1641, died 10 December 1717, married (1) Hannah Hawkins, (2) Elizabeth (Clark) Freak[9]
  4. Anne, wife of Samuel Dyer,[2] was born 18 November 1643, died 10 January 1716/7, married second Daniel Vernon in 1679[9]
  5. William,[2] baptized 18 January 1645/6, probably died young (not named in father's will)[9]
  6. Katherine,[2] baptized 14 May 1648, died before February 1652/3[9]
  7. Susanna, wife of Nathaniel Coddington,[2] was baptized 10 June 1649, died after 26 May 1716[9]

Death

Katherine Hamby was living 10 June 1649[1][2] (when her last child was born) and 1651.[9] Katherine's date of death is unknown, but it is thought she died at Boston or Mt. Wollaston, where the family had a farm.[9] Her husband remarried by 1651 Abigail (Firmage/Fermayes) Burton.[8] Edward had four more children with his second wife and was killed in King Philips War on 19 August 1675.[1][2]

Research Note

Mother's Name

Katherine's marriage license calls her mother Katherine. This statement "has been a stumbling block in the identification of Katherine (Hamby) Hutchinson, for all other evidence [this includes her baptism record[4]] points to her having been the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Arnold) Hanbie/Hamby of Ipswich." The use of the mother's name "Katherine", appears to be a clerical error.[9]

Having seen another source of her marriage allegation stating her mother is a Katherine, I have inserted that and marked the mother Elizabeth Arnold as uncertain.

There are two personal categories used on this profile. Is that permitted on project-managed profiles?

Not as a general rule. From the help page.

We generally do not use personal categories on Pre-1700 Profiles or Project-Protected Profiles. As a matter of courtesy don't delete a personal category off an Open profile without checking first with the person whose category it is. I've contacted the person to remove them.
