John Hamilton is Notable.

John Hamilton, Abbot of Paisley, Bishop of Dunkeld, Archbishop of St Andrews was the son of James Hamilton, Ist Earl of Arran.[1]

He had issue with Grizel Sempill, eldest daughter of Robert Sempill, the Great Lord Sempill:[1][2][3][4][5]

  1. William,[1][4][6] of Drumry
  2. John of Blair[1][4] d. 11 May 1630
  3. James[1][4]

He had issue by Grizzel or another woman:

  1. Jane or Margaret married Robert Bruce of Blairhall,[1][4][6]
  2. David[1][6]

In 1563, he was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for popery.[7]

John was hanged on 6 Apr 1571 for the murders of King Henry and Regent Moray.[8]

  • The Calendar of State Papers contains multiple entries found mostly in the index under "Dunkeld, bishops of."[9]

Hamilton-4469 and Hamilton-1254 do not represent the same person because: James Hamilton had two sons named John. John of Broomhill was born from Janet Calderwood, and married Elizabeth Hamilton, and had Claud. John Hamilton from Beatrix Drummond married Janet Home, and had Margaret. These are two separate people.
