Armstrong was married four times. His first marriage was to Anna Hamilton in Peru, Wis. They separated in about 1876, at Spring Green, Sauk County, Wis. No known divorce. She died in about 1893, at the home of her daughter, Eliza Petteplace, at Smith Center, Kansas. Their children were:
Mary, b. 21 Nov; Eliza, b. 2 May; Matilda A., b. 18 Jun; Thompson P., b. 2 May; Pricilla, b. 29 Jan; Winfield, b. 20 Aug; Edward, b. 20 May.
The children's names and the month and day of their birth, but not the year, were taken from a form in Armstrong's pension file at the National Archives.
On the 1880 US Census for Smith County KS, Anna is shown living with James and Hannah (Moore) Phetteplace and family with her two sons, Winfield S Moore and Edward C. Moore.
