As for the confusion concerning the Hamilton Y-DNA and the Douglas Y-DNA.

In one instance of the Douglas Y-DNA: Y-DNA I-L338 for all of Walter Hamilton of Darngaber's male line? Possibly. (my early Great-grandfather, on my grandMother's side) Y-DNA is possibly I-Y6635 per Descendent of Walter Hamilton of Darngaber, (potentially one of my FTDNA matches). BOTH I-L338 (also known as I1a2a1a1a) and related I-Y6635 (also known as I1a3a1a1a1, Parent Branch: I-Y6624) are of Haplogroup I-M253 also known as I1 (a Y chromosome haplogroup). I-L338 is a well-known Haplogroup of the Douglases.

Walter Hamilton of Darngaber BIRTH 1392 • Cadzow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, DEATH 20 MAY 1441 • Trabzon, Trabzon, Turkey and his descendants were descended from the Douglases and not the Hamiltons.

(And it is not unreasonable to, at least, consider the uncle of Walter Hamilton (of Darngarber, not "of Cadzow"), John Hamilton of Fingalton as not being a Hamilton either as their Y-DNA has been compared. Assumptions to the contrary are very risky.)

It looks as though two generations have been omitted between this man and his alleged father, according to Burke's landed gentry and The Peerage. The few dates that are cited support this. The confusion probably arises as there should be two sets of Gavins and Johns, viz:

1/ Gavin Hamilton, the 4th son of Sir James Hamilton, Dominus de Cadzow, was ancestor of this family. He married Jean Muirhead. By this lady he had issue, Robert, Chancellor of Glasgow; Thomas; John, who s. to Orbistoun; Archibald; and Gavin, the ancestor of the family of Haggs.

2/ The 3rd son, John Hamilton, the first designated by the title of Orbistoun, married Jean, dau. of Hamilton, of Woodhall, by whom he had issue.

3/ The eldest son, Gavin Hamilton, of Orbistoun, was named one of the heirs of entail in a Deed of Settlement executed by the first Earl of Arran, 16 Jan. 1513. He was again named one of the heirs of entail in a settlement of the Hamilton estates by the Duke of Chatelherault, of date 15 Sept. 1540. He m. Helen, dau. of Wallace, of Cairnhill, and had issue.

4/ The elder son, John Hamilton, of Orbistoun, accompanying the Queen, along with his kinsmen, the Hamiltons, to the battle of Lang-side, fell in that conflict. He m. Margaret, dau. of Hamilton, of Haggs, and had issue. The eldest son,

5/ John Hamilton, of Orbistoun, m. Christian, dau. of Robert Dalzell, ancestor of the Earls of Carnwath, and had issue,

6/ John, his heir, afterwards Sir John, Lord Justice Clerk, whose male line expired with his grandson, William Hamilton, of Orbistoun and Erskine. James, the first of Dalzell. Gavin. Marion, m. James Hamilton, of Bangour. Margaret, m. John Walkinshaw of that ilk. John of Orbistoun d. about 1621; his 2nd son, James Hamilton, acquired Dalzell from his uncle. Sir Robert Dalzell, 1st Earl of Carnwath. He m. Jean, dau. of Sir John Henderson, of Fordell, d. Feb. 1668; and was s.by his eldest son,
