John Hammond was born on November 30, 1663, at Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin Hammond and his wife Mary Vincent, daughter of John Vincent.[1]
He came to Rochester, Massachusetts with his brother Samuel about 1680.[2] About the year 1700 he built the "Old Hammond House", known currently as the "Howes House". It is the oldest dwelling in the town, and one of its landmarks.[3] John was a Lieutenant in the militia, among other roles and titles he held. He was one of the founders, and a prominent member of the first Congregational Church in Rochester.[4] He and Mary Arnold married in 1691, and they had eleven children.[5]

John Hammond married Mary Arnold, daughter of Rev. Samuel Arnold, in 1691. The couple had eleven children. The nine who lived to maturity are:[7]
Lt. John Hammond died on April 19, 1749, at Rochester, Massachusetts.[8]
John is buried in the Hammond cemetery, in Mattapoisett, Plymouth Massachusetts.[9]
