The Hammond genealogy reported that Joseph was "said to have moved to the State of New York, all trace of him afterwards being lost. Issue: Abigail, Matilda, Nancy, Antipas, and Stephen."[2] In fact, Joseph and his family moved to an area claimed by both New York and New Hampshire, which subsequently became southeastern Vermont, and where record-keeping was inconsistent at best. In 1798 Joseph purchased land in Whitingham from early settlers Eleazer Lyman and Amasa Shumway;[4] his family is recorded there in the 1800 census, and he served as tithingman for the town in 1802.[5]
In Jul 1806, administration on the estate of Joseph Hammond, deceased, was granted to his widow Rachel and to Baxter Hall.[6] Inventory was recorded in Sep 1806 and May 1807.[7][8] Joseph's estate was settled in 1808, with his land divided among his widow and children Stephen, Rachel, Antipas, Nancy, Nabby, and Matilda (in that order, which does not seem to particularly illuminate their birth order).[9]
