Brewster Handy was born in July 1795 in Vermont. [1] He was the son of Michael and Roxalana (Burroughs) Handy. About 1810, they moved to Danby, Tioga County (later Tompkins County), New York. The surname Brewster was common in both Sharon and Royalton, Vermont, where Brewster’s father was raised.
Brewster married Rosina (maiden name unknown) about 1815. In 1820, they were in Chemung, New York. [2] By 1830, the family had moved to Candor, New York where Brewster and Rosina lived out their lives. It’s believed they were farming near the town line with Danby, Tompkins County, New York, where their son Michael settled, but more research is needed. [3] [4] [5] [6]
In the early 1830s, Brewster was named in the Tavern Records "Grog Book" of Jacob Willsey who was in the area which later became Willseyville, New York. [7]
Brewster died March 1, 1852 in Candor, New York. He is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Candor, Tioga County, New York. [8]
