Ellis Sanders Harlan was born March 4, 1804 in the Cherokee Nation, the son of George Harlan and Nancy Sanders, great-grandson of Nan-ye-hi/Nancy Ward. He married Nancy Barnett in 1828. [1] They were the parents of eight children, James, Mary, Sarah, Philina, John, Timothy, Ruth, and Emily. The family was Removed to Indian Territory over the Trail of Tears in the Bell detachment in 1838. [2] Ellis was elected both as a judge and as a councilor in the Flint District, Cherokee Nation, I.T. He died December 7, 1866. [3]
