Biography

Roger is the son of Tancred de Hauteville-2 and Fressenda was born inNormandy, France. . He married three times and also had a mistress. He was the younger son of Tancred (Hauteville-2) and he emigrated to the south of Italy around 1057 following his elder brothers Drogon , Robert and Guillaume as soldier and in search of lands to conquer. From his stronghold of Mileto (Calabria), his main activity become the conquest of Sicily held by Moslems. Starting in 1061 from Messina he took in 1072 Pallermo (together with his brother Robert) and most of the island, becoming "count of Sicily" with the consent of the Pope Urbano II and founding the base of the Kingdom of Sicily ruled by the "Altavilla ". He was respectful of the local populations of Greek, Arabic , and Jewish tradition and civilisation and took from them the way of ruling mostly by "civil servants" appointed by himself rather than through feodal Lords, in the way of northern Europe. Howevwer, to balance the Greek-Ortodox and Arab-Moslem influences he promoted the immigration of Latin- Roman Catolics people from the northern regions: Piedmont, Liguria ( called "Lombardi") but also Emilia, south of France and even England), and fundamental for this policy was his alliance with Bonifacio (del Vasto-12) Marchese di Savona by marrying his niece Adelaide (Vasto-1) and arranging the weddings of his children with other sons or nephews of Bonifacio. Together with his brother Robert Guiscard, he was the military founder of the Norman rule in the south of Italy, while his son Roberto (Altavilla-5) took the task of politically founding the Kingdom of Sicily as a state. Under his reign a lot of monuments and churches were built or started. At his death, aged 70, in Mileto (Calabria) he was succeeded by Simon (died sooon) and Ruggero, under the wise regency of his third wife Adelaide.

Matilda (daughter of Eremburge) was not the wife of Robert, Count of Eu. That was her step sister as noted above. She was married to Ranulf II Count of Alife. An interesting story itself.
