Biography

Nancy was born about 1778, judging from when her first children were born, the daughter of Jacob Hayes and Elizabeth Rector. About 1796, Nancy married Joseph H. Ramey III and they had five children:

Sally, b. 24 Feb 1797
Elijah Daniel, b. 23 Mar 1803, d. 2 Sep 1891
Andrew, b. about 1805
Celia, b. 24 Jul 1811, d. 17 Aug 1906
John Jefferson, b. about 1816, d. 9 Mar 1889.

Nancy died about or before 1835 (see Research Notes).

Research Notes

When Nancy's father Jacob Hays died about 1835, the court ordered that Jacob's property be divided among his widow and heirs[1]. A report to the court on 21 Jun 1837 summarized the division of property; the listed heirs included each of his sons who were living and the spouses of each of his daughters who were living. In addition, property was left to Elizabeth, the daughter of his son James who we know had died in 1830. Also in the list of property was "Lot No. 10 - 20 acres - John Collins John Ramey and Andrew Ramey." John Collins was the son of Jacob's daughter Effie, and John and Andrew Ramey were two sons of Jacob's daughter Nancy. So Nancy had obviously died before the will was either written or probated. We have no record of Nancy's death, but Jacob's will confirms that she married a Ramey and that Andrew and John were her sons, and that she probably died before 1835.

For the name of Nancy's spouse, we refer to The Remy Family in America[2]:

"REV. JOSEPH H. RAMEY, the III, b. abt. 1776 near Low Gap (formerly called Fishes Gap), North Carolina, and d. in 1857. He was a Methodist Episcopal preacher and married twice. He m.1st Miss Hayes by whom he had 5 children, and m.2d at age of 62, Mathilda Jarvis, by whom he had 6 children, the youngest born when we was 74 years old."

"Children by his first wife (Hayes) – 5
-SALLY, b. Feb. 24,1797, m. and left her husband one day after marriage living from then on with first one and then another of her nieces and nephews. Later in life she built a small house on the Andrew Ramey farm six miles south of Lexington, Mo., where she lived until she died[3].

-ANDREW SR. b.abt.1805 near Low Gap.,N.C., moved to Mo.abt.1838 and settled at Higginsville, Lafayette Co.,Mo. where he married and raised a family. Civil War Veteran. Children:

Nancy's children John Ramey and Andrew Ramey in this list match the heirs listed in Jacob Hays' probate.

Nancy Hayes married Joseph Ramey. Nancy's father's will leaves property to Nancy's children Andrew and John Ramey.

Hayes-4711 and Hayes-826 appear to represent the same person because: Merge of parents created need to merge children
