"HENRY, James, a Delegate from Virginia; born in Accomac County, Va., in 1731; pursued classical studies; studied law at the University of Edinburgh; was admitted to the bar and practiced; member of the house of burgesses 1772-1774; member of the State house of delegates in 1776, 1777, and 1779; Member of the Continental Congress in 1780; judge of the State court of admiralty 1782-1788; judge of the general court from December 24, 1788, to January 1800, when he resigned; died at his home, “Fleet Bay,” in Northumberland County, Va., December 9, 1804. [1]
James is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A053765. DAR records indicate that his wife was Sarah Maria Scarborough. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their sons, John Henry, who married Martha Lanier Williams; Samuel Hugh Henry, who married Mary Beale; and Edward Hugh Henry, who married Elizabeth Washington Peyton; and of their daughters, Mary Henry, who married John Wise; Sarah Elizabeth Henry, who married William Moncure; and Tabitha Henry, who married Hancock Eustace. [2]
Although the above bios indicate that James was born in Accomac county, Virginia, there is much speculation that he and his brother, Reverend Hugh James were actually born in Aberdeen, Scotland and immigrated at a young age. [3] The Biographical Directory of the United States Congress indicates that James studied law at the University of Edinburgh.
