Thomas Henwood was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England.
Thomas was born to Richard and Grace in 1813 at Dock, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth Devon.[1] In 1838 he joined the Navy, serving initially on the Mutine. In 1838 he married Susannah Ball in East Stonehouse, recorded as a seaman. [2]
In 1840 he joined the ship HMS Mutine, a Brig sloop, Armament 4, which was launched in 1825 and disposed of in 1841, based in Falmouth. [3] His service aboard involved sailing between the islands of the West Indies - 22 Aug 1840 Falmouth arrived from the West Indies, Barbadoes (6 Jul) ; Trinidad (8th-13th) ; off Grenada (16th) ; St. Kitt's (18th) ; Tortola and St. Thomas’s (19th) ; off Porto Rico (23d), Cape Hayti (25th) : on the 28th the Hecla arrived up with the mails from Jamaica, and towed the Mutine outside to continue her passage to Falmouth.
4 Sep 1840 Plymouth, arrived on Saturday from Falmouth, and sailed for Chatham to be paid off.
27 May 1841 Chatham. Mutine, 10 guns, 231 tons, put up for sale

By 1841 he was recorded as a coastguard, which at the time was under the auspices of the Royal Navy. The family was living at Paragon Place Portland Dorset [4]

Note There were two Stations on the Isle of Portland, to the north at Balaclava Bay, named on the OS map Balaclava CG Station, to the south one on the Bill, Paragon Place is not named anywhere on the Isle.

On 15th May 1843 Thomas was posted to Polkerris, Cornwall, and in 1845 was promoted to Commissioned Boatman in Polkerris. [5]

By 1851 Thomas and his family were living at Harbour, Par village Cornwall. [6]

In 1856 Thomas won two gallantry medals for the rescue of a member of the crew of a wrecked ship "The Endeavor" off the coast at Polkerris in 1856, one from Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and one from Lloyd's (Medal for Saving Life At Sea). The citation in the report of the rescue in the Cornwall Archives, reference R.C.G. 9/5/1856(fri) (R).BOT Wk 1859 (summary) p22, saying "at 9 o'clock in the morning (?) out of Polkerris Bay with the wind strong at SSE force 10, stuck on a rock between Gribben Head and Polkerris, near Fowey, the only survivor George Derby (Dercy?) who got onto a high tide rock and was rescued by three local men. The boat had to be lowered down a 200ft. cliff to be launched near the man. [7] There is a report of the rescue in the Exeter Flying Post dated May 18th 1856.

In 1856 22nd May Thomas was promoted to Acting Chief Boatman in Charge at Newtown, and in subsequent censuses Thomas was recorded as a customs officer.

By 1861 The family was living at Beach, Weybourne Norfolk. [8]

Note Fowey may be the registration town for births at Polkerris, while St Blaize and St Austel , which are inland may have been the registration centre for Par.

Thomas retired in 1870, and in 1871 he and his family were living at Quaker Lane Fakenham, Norfolk. [9]

Thomas died aged 73 in 1886 in Derby [11] and was buried in the Nottingham Road cemetery in Derby (see photo)
