Biography

He is sometimes referred to as Mungo, a nickname for Kentigern; and occasionally given the territorial designation "of Luffness".

A Petition to Pope Innocent 8th signed in the presence of Henry Congleton and others in January 1491, craved absolution for numerous people during the recent troubles in Scotland and also refers to the battle of Sauchie. Amongst those named the first is Robert Lauder, son and heir-apparent of the Lord of Bass and Baron of Stenton, &c. Others included KENTIGERN HEPBURN, Patrick Skowgale, Alexander Sydserf, William Sinclair, David Renton, Alexander Home, Archibald Dunbar, William Manderston, Gavin Home, and John Sommerville. The Bull of Absolution is dated 27th June 1491.[1]

On the 7th July 1498 an action was raised by Mungo Hepburn, son and apparent heir of David Hepburn of Waughton, against Robert Lauder of the Bass, knight, for wrongful eviction of said Mungo and his sub-tenants from the south side of Priestlaws in the Lammermuirs. Agreement appears to have been reached and a decree issued for reinstatment of the complainer etc.[2]

John de Broun of Colstoun [Haddingtonshire] is a witness in a charter of David Hepburn of Waughton, to his son and heir Kentigern Hepburn and his wife Margaret Lauder, of the lands of Waughton, dated 6th September 1498.[3][4]

On the 12th July 1502 Kentigern Hepburn of Lufness [another Hepburn holding] witnessed the charter granted by Gavin Dunbar to Robert Lauder of the Bass, knight, of the lands of Wester Spott, &c., which charter was confirmed by King James IV under The Great Seal on 17th July 1502.[5]

In the Haddington Burgh records there is a Notorial Instrument dated February 1504 mentioning Mungo [Kentigern], son and apparent heir of David Hepburn of Waughton.[6]

There is a a charter recording the marriage, which took place at Bolton Church, Haddingtonshire, on the 3rd November 1510, between Patrick Hepburn of Waughton, knight, and Elena [or Helen], daughter of Adam Hepburn of Craggs, knight. Witnesses included Kentigern Hepburn of Luffness, (the groom's father), George Hepburn of Rollanstoun, Patrick Hepburn of Beynston, and Patrick, William and Henry Hepburn (no designations).[7]

"The Honourable Sir Kentigern Hepburn of Waughton"'s huge medieval grave-slab is described in Graveyard Monuments in East Lothian by Angus Graham, M.A.,F.S.A.[8]
