Biography

Zacharaiah Herrick was born in 1636 in Beverly, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of Henry Herrick and Edith Laskin. He married Mary Dodge, who had been born in Somerset, England, around 1632. They would have married before 1654, when their daughter Mary was born in Beverly. They had seven other children: Elizabeth, Henry, Sarah, Martha, Hannah, Henry, and Abigail. Zachariah died in 1695, when he would have been about 59. [1]

Birth & Baptism

Zachariah, son of Henry Herick was baptized 25.10m.1636 (25 Dec. 1636)[2], so was probably born about 1636 in Salem.

Marriage

Zachariah married about 1653 (based on the birth of his eldest child in Oct 1654) Mary Dodge. Marriage confirmed by the will of Richard Dodge Sr who leaves bequests to his daughter Mary Herrick and his daughter's daughters.[3]

Oath of Fidelity

Zachariah Herrick, carpenter took the oath of fidelity in Beverly Dec 3, 1677.[4] Beverly was incorporated in 1668. It had previously been part of Salem.

Death & Will

The often misreported death date for Zachariah of August 18, 1710 is the death date of his wife Mary.

Zachariah died May 3, 1695 in Beverly as reported in the town records and confirmed by his probate records.

Zachariah, carpenter of Beverly made a will July 31, 1694, which was subsequently posted in the records May 22, 1695. His inventory was valued at 419 pounds. His legatees were wife Mary, son Henry; and four daughters Elizabeth Stone, Sarah Morgan, Martha Herick, & Hanah Herick.[5]

ii ZACHARIAH, bp. Salem 25 December 1636 [ SChR 16]; m. by 1654 Mary Dodge, daughter of Richard Dodge (eldest known child b. Salem 10 October 1654; in his will of 14 November 1670 Richard Dodge Sr. of Beverly made bequests to "my daughter Mary Herrick" and "my daughter Mary Herrick's five daughters" [ EPR 2:230]).

II. Zacharie, bap. Dec. 25, 1636. II. 2- ZACHARIE HERRICK; d. May 20. 1695 ; Beverly, Mass.; settled on a farm, given him by his father, at Birch Plain. He was also a house carpenter, as appears by Probate records. He figured somewhat in the history of the Witchcraft delusion at Salem, Mass. (See Appendix C.) He m. 1653, Mary, dau, of Richard Dodge, of Beverly, Mass., who was b. 1632, and d. August 18, 1710, aged 78 years.
