Biography

(Alice) Virginia, also known as "Tyn" or "Tynsie", was born on 20 February, 1920 at Hicklin Hearthstone in Lexington, MO. She got the nick name from her brother Jack, who could not pronounce "Virginia". She was the daughter of John Ryland Hickin and Alma Cornelia Davis Hicklin. Virginia was raised in the Lexington area and attended the Hicklin School, a rural schoolhouse, and Lexington High School, graduating in 1938. She then attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO, where she did custom sewing to work her way through school.

In 1943, she married Harold W. Thieman. She along with her husband, owned and operated Thieman's Polled Shorthorns. She adopted and raised two children, Jeannette and James, and taught them the cattle business. One of the highlights of her life was in 1957, when she travelled around the world with Harold, judging cattle and promoting shorthorn cattle. Harold wrote long, detailed letters home to the Higginsville paper from every port; she laughed when she told of how he would mention the FOOD in every letter. There are many fine pictures from this trip (see photos) and the letters are currently being transposed by her niece, Marcia. Virginia was known as an excellent hostess as cattle sales at their farm were always accompanied by fine food, drink and conversation.

She was very active in the community even at her advanced age. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Red Hat Society, Lafayette-Lexington Daughters of the American Revolution and Chapter EK- PEO. She was a former member of the Concordia Homemaker's club, Missouri Shorthorn Lassies and had served in the past as a 4-H leader. She loved birds and dogs, especially Border Collies, and was active in her yard. She was a great friend to all.

Virginia, a most excellent friend, will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
