Biography

Ebenezer Hickock, son of Sgt. Samuel & Hannah (Upson), was born about 1692.[1]

He m. (1) perhaps Rebecca Keeler, daughter of Ralph Keeler.[1]

He m. (2) at North Stratford, Connecticut, 17 June 1747, Esther (Curtis). Esther was the dau. of Benjamin Curtis and the widow of Daniel Beach. She was bapt. 10 Feb 1706, and d 25 Aug 1775 in her 70th year.[1]

Capt. Ebenezer died at Bethel, Connecticut, 8 July 1774 in his 83 yr[1] His gravestone at Congregational Church Cemetery, Bethel, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA reads "Here Lies Buried the Body of Capt. Ebenezer Hickok who departed this Life July 8th AD 1774 in the 83d Year of his Age[.] He was for many Years a Deacon in the Church of Bethel a principal Pillar in that Church and Society and an Ornament to the Christians Religion." "The memory of the Righteous is blessed."[2]

Probate

His will is dated 15 April 1760 in Danbury and proved on 2 August 1774 in Danbury. He mentions his wife Esther, and his children, Ebenezer Hickok, Daniel Hickok, and Benjamin Hickok, Mary, wife of Ebenezer Platt, Hannah, wife of Jabez Taylor, and Abigail, wife of Nathan Benedict. His inventory was completed on 23 September 1774.[3]

In 1774 his estate distribution is set out to his widow Esther, Ebenezer Hickok (eldest son), Daniel Hickok, Benjamin Hickok, Mary, wife of Isaac Hoyt, Hannah, wife of Jabez Taylor, and Abigail, wife of Nathan Benedict.[4]

  • "The house at 245 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel is believed to have been built in 1760 by Ebenezer Hickok (1692-1774). It was used as a tavern during the Revolutionary War by his son, Capt. Benjamin Hickcok (1750-1816), a veteran of the war who also owned a store and a gristmill. Benjamin’s son, Eli Hickok (1770-1827), later had his hatter’s shop at the address."
