Grandfather of James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, Lawman & Gunfighter
The Oliver Hickok family was a proud family.
The Hickok line dates back to New England in the 1700s. Oliver Otis Hickok was born in 1774, eventually moving to Pittsford, Vermont. He met Chloe Dewey, and they married in early 1801. Shortly after their marriage, they saw the birth of William Alonzo Hickok on Dec. 5, 1801. The couple also had a daughter named Chloe, born in 1809.
On Dec, 24, 1812, Oliver left his young family and enlisted to fight the British during the War of 1812. By the fall of 1813, Oliver Hickok was stationed at Sackett’s Harbor — the small community was now home to over 5,000 army soldiers and 3,000 naval personnel.
On Oct. 3, 1813, Oliver Hickok died — whether from disease, accident or injury is unclear.[1]
