Disputed Origins (and existence?)

His existence, vitals and relationships appear to have originated in Benjamin D. Hicks, “Hicks MSS,” [sic], undated (but sometime between 1867-1880), multi-volume set, edited by Mrs Florence Youngs, available only in hard copy form at the Long Island Historical Society, but excerpted and reviewed by Seversmith (1939). This is the earliest known record of his existence and data. If you have evidence of original birth, marriage, death and offspring records, please share them.

According to this source, the genealogy of the Thomas Hicks' family is as follows:

Baptist Hicks was born about 1524-1526 in Fortesset, Gloucester, England.[citation needed]

NOTE: This Baptist Hicks was born 1524 and was married to Mary Everard. Sir Baptist Hicks was born 1551 and was married to Elizabeth May. Google "Sir Baptist Hicks" for more details. judyorlan @ nventure.com.
Benjamin Hicks (1867-1880) claims he was son of Thomas Hicks and Margaret Atwood, and that he married Mary, daughter of James Everard, Esq., but cites no sources for these claims. The parents have been detached.

Others say he was baptized in Middlesex London Smithfield, Middlesex, England.[citation needed]

We are seeking original sources to confirm the existence, origins, marriage and identity of the offspring of this earlier Baptist Hicks. Smith-32867 10:34, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Research Notes

In 1939, Seversmith reviewed Benjamin Hicks' manuscript and pointed out that there is NO evidence to support this lineage, and that BDH offered no explanation for this branch. It is all the more unhappy to note that a persistent search in the available Gloucestershire, MIddlesex and London records has not uncovered James Hicks who married Phebe, or Baptist Hicks who married Mary Everard.[1]

Sources

  1. Herbert F. Seversmith, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, and New England, 3(c1939):368-383 ably disproves the lineage claims between Robert the immigrant and John Hickes of 1487. See pp 1356-1373; he points out that no marriage record is found for either James Hicks and Phebe [he doesn’t name “Allyn” as her maiden name] or of Baptist Hicks and Mary Everard.

This person looks to be made up from an online tree. I am familiar with the primary sources supporting the early Hicks genealogy and haven't found any evidence that would support an early Baptist Hix/ Hicks etc. born in Gloucestershire so this profile is very suspect. I am in the process of transferring my research to wikitree but it will take time. In the meantime, please see a well-sourced Hicks tree here (free to view): https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/56285596/person/342088355440/facts

and wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptist_Hicks,_1st_Viscount_Campden. In conclusion, Hicks-708 and Hicks 4038 appear to represent the same person, perhaps as the result of some confused genealogy from books?

Most of us concur with you. We chose to keep the profile here because if we merged it away, someone would co,e along and recreate it. It serves as a warning.

But as explained already above, we think that the existence of this man (and the relations associated with him) was introduced in the late 19th century by Benjamin D Hicks.

Thanks Jillaine! Nice work. The reason that brought me here was I recently found something interesting while doing some other unrelated research. I am interested in the Hicks family of Berkeley as part of a “Berkeley project” I am doing but I didn’t realise those Hicks in Berkeley might be related to the Cromhall Hicks until recently. Here is an extract from the will of Robert Baker of Pedenton (Pedington) in Berkeley, which lies between the villages of Ham and Stone, which was dated 17 Feb 1551/2 (Pedington): "I give unto my son Tho. £10 in the condycon that yf my brother Robert Hyxe of London do forgeve me £6 13s. 4d. "

This is obviously the same Robert Hix who was father of Baptist Hicks, the Viscount, for he had known family connections to south Gloucestershire. What is interesting is that Robert Hicks married Julian Arthur of Clapton in Gordano, so they were unlikely to have been brothers in law. Robert Hicks mentions his mother Margaret Hicks in his will, so I assume that Robert Baker was a half brother by the mothers previous marriage to one _ Baker. Would that be feasible?

Fascinating. I would encourage you to start a G2G thread, inviting others to engage in your inquiry, perhaps launching it from Robert Hicks' profile so those who watch him will see it

G2g is wikitree's discussion forum. Be sure to add relevant surname tags and also "England". Wikitree's England project has some great researchers who would have some feedback fir you.

Read this again after some coffee and breakfast...

Yes, one theory is that Robert Baker and Robert Hicks were brothers through a shared mother but different fathers.

Another scenario is that Robert Hicks had a sister who married Robert Baker. Do we know who Robert Baker married?

I'd like to see this detail (about Robert Baker's will) added at least as a comment to the profile of Robert Hicks. But we need a full citation for the will; do you have one, David?

Robert Baker married Isabel, who survived him. I have done a write up on the page of Robert Hicks that I hope you find interesting.

I have a public tree here: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/56285596/person/342088355440

I am transferring my research to wiki as I want more people to be able to read it.

So happy to hear it; I cannot access your public tree on ancestry.co.uk.
