James married Elizabeth Stevens (born on September 30, 1781 in Onslow; daughter of Thomas Stevens and Catherine (McLeod) Stevens). Their children were:
- Nathan Higgins (1803–1880)
- Joshua M. Higgins (1809–1882)
James died on October 5, 1868 in Greenville, Cumberland, N.S., aged 86.
