The records of the First Congregational Church of Salem, Mass. show that James Haines was a member as early as Dec. 25, 1637, and the baptisms of his eight children are recorded, including Benjamin, baptized Aug. 26, 1643. ^{[2] [3]}

There is a discussion in the Hinds Family book regarding the spelling and pronunciation of the surname of this family, and why it is possible for a family whose name is spelled "Haines" is actually from the same ancestors as those with the name "Hinds" ^[4]
