Biography

Gaius was a Revolutionary War soldier, serving as a private in Captain Oliver Shattuck's company, Col Sears' regiment, Hampshire County, Massachusetts troops. He moved to Shelburne, MA, about 1786, to Canaan, NH, about 1793 and to Waitsfield, VT. about 1795. He lived for a time in Montpelier, VT., but returned to Waitsfield where his farm was located in lots 129 and 130.

In addition to Relief, the couple had the following children: Sally, b. Aug 17, 1786 in Shelburne, d. June 5, 1818 unmarried; Wells, b. Mar 2, 1788; Relief, b. May 25, 1789, d. July 1, 1790; Stebbins, b. Oct 26, 1793 in Canaan, NH; Eli, b. Oct 5, 1795 in Waitsfield, d. Mar 28, 1872, unmarried; Emilia, b. Feb. 17, 1798 and married Dec. 2, 1819 to Jacob Sargent from down Fayston way; a son, b. Dec. 4, 1799, d. Dec. 8, 1799; Fanny, b. Nov. 25, 1800 and married Nov. 13, 1823 to Charles Newcomb; a daughter, b. June 11, 1803, d. June 22, 1803; Alonzo, b. Jan 24, 1805, d. Mar 29, 1809; and Mariah, b. 1808, d. June 25, 1839.
