Disputed Origins

If Jacob Castle had children, they undoubtedly had a mother. Who she was or if there was more than one is unknown. She may have been a Native American woman or she may have been White, we simple do not know.

There are no records that clearly identify any child of Jacob Castle. In a war pension application Bazel Castle mentioned his father Jacob in his war pension application,[1] but there were multiple men named Jacob Castle living at that time and there is no document that ties Bazel to the Jacob who lived along the New River. If it is impossible to tie a child to this Jacob it is more impossible to tie the child to an unknown mother.

The basis of this biography seems to be the Shawnee Heritage books by Don Greene, which contain many gross errors. 2nd Chief Ben Barnes of the Shawnee Tribe in Miami, Oklahoma concurs. He does not believe that this particular woman (Sowege) existed. He also states that Sowege is not a Shawnee name and that much of the information purportedly about her would not be known, i.e. that she was from a particular clan.[citation needed]

There is no record from which the name Mary Elizabeth can be extracted. No wife of Jacob Castle was ever mentioned in any document. If she was the wife of Kessel who was mentioned in the letter from Samuel Eckerlin to Alexander Mack describing the flood of August 1749,[citation needed] her forename was not mentioned.

The marriage given below is for a woman named Mary Swan who married on 25 April 1764 in Hanover, PA. Her husband was William Owens. What does this have to do with Jacob Castle and his wife?

The place of death given for this woman does not exist and is a meaningless mish mash of place names: Pellissippi River, Indiana, and Virginia.

Jacob Castle has been described as a whole is larger than its parts. He lived a unique lifestyle, that of a frontiersman, much like his near contemporary Daniel Boone. And, like Daniel Boone, he has become a semi-mythical character.

But this is WikiTree, where we work on genealogy, not mythology. Until that time when solid evidence is unearthed, Jacob Castle's wife/wives should remain Unknown.

Those who claim descent from Jacob Castle should know that there is a Castle DNA project which is attempting to trace his descendants. So far, multiple who claim him as an ancestor do not have matching DNA, meaning some of them are not really his descendants. [2]

False Biography

SOWEGE "Gliding Swan," a Pekowi Shawnee, married JACOB CASTLE, known as WHITE TASSEL, 1736 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.[3]

She changed her name to MARY ELIZABETH. She was a Kispokotha (Warrior Clan) Shawnee. Waupaathee is "swan" in Shawnee, therefore Sowega must denote some effeminate action of a swan.,perhaps "Gliding Swan" or "Swimming Swan".

The Shawnee had 34 tribes (gens or clans) or name groups, as they are sometimes referred by. The Shawnee child is named by the elder of the tribe or gen of that particular division of the nation. In this case it would be the Kispokotha (Warrior Clan).

"They generally bestow a name descriptive of some act of the animal or bird which is the totem of the infant named."
"Women receive names within their totem that convey an idea of softness or effeminacy". In general Shawnee "names are always more or less descriptive of some event which has occured, or of particular anticipated points in the character of the person, or of the animal which is their totem or name group."[4]

Therefore it is fairly safe to assume that Sowegae is a name that identifies some effeminate nature of behavior of a swan.

NOTE: There is no such word as Sowege in the Shawnee language.

My Names Is Stacey Parks, my Family Comes Out of Grayson/Wythe County Virginia For many generations.

Let me Start By Saying There Is A Historical Book Published In 1930, Approximately 495 Pages That tells Of Jacob Cassell, The Cassell Family And How They Are Related To Or Intermarried Into The keesling Family Out of Wythe County Virginia, Catherine Keesling was One of GGGGG Grandmothers, The Book and its Entirety Are On Ancestry I Have Posted The Title page As A Source On my Family tree On Wiki, See Jacob Cassell, Rachel Cassell, I Have Cassell And Castle Cousins, As Well As Shroyer, On Ancestry & FTDNA. Sowege Gliding Swan Was Supposed To Be A Half Sister To Shawnee Chief John Shroyer, According to the net. Let me Also add That I Come Back With Native American DNA, And Have Native American matches On FTDNA, Most Of My Virginia Cousins Come back With Scientifically Proven Cherokee Only haplogroups, This Indian Ancestry Comes from my Father's Family, So I Did Not get The Female Indian Haplogroup, I Joined A Piqua Shawnee Study On FTDNA, And I Have Matches, I Dont Know if These People Are truly Shawnee, Or Are Just Mixed Cherokee & European Cousins, I Was Also Part of Another Native American Study On FTDNA And Had matches There Also, But The Study is Kinda general, *A Note On Don Greene, I Know Some Folks Don't Look At Him As Credible, However I Found I have More Than One Set Of GG Grandparents In His Books(I Have Only Seen Excerpts). The Pedigrees Are Accurate, be it White Or Indian, But its Been my Personal Experience So Far That It Comes back To The Cherokee People, Not Shawnee. I'm Fowarding A Copy Of This email To The Project manager For The Native American Study & The Manager For Sowege Gliding Swan's Wiki Page. I Need To Study The DNA And further relation To Shawnee Chief John Shroyer,Pehaps We Will Get More Information. Thank you, Stacey Parks

I’m sorry, Don Greene is completely unreliable and there is no DNA test that can identify a specific Indian tribe. Some of th3 people in Green’s books were real, but his claims that they were Indian is fictional. DNA may be able to identify descendants of Jacob Cassel, but there were at least two other Cassel/Castle/Kassell families in southwestern Virginia at the same time who used many of the same names. All were descended from German-speaking people who emigrated first to Pennsylvania and may have been related.

Atttached is a snip from "Shawnee Heritage" which appears to be the source for much of this information, added to on the Internet over the past twenty years. There are no actual Shawnee records this far back. If a Pennsylvania German man married a Shawnee woman in Lancaster, PA in 1736 it would have been widely reported as a unique event.

Flagging this profile for needing attention. What yet remains to be done here? Thanks.

The Native American project is currently cleaning up those profiles that had erroneously been edited to include a "Family of Powhatan" template. This template was added to MANY profiles a few years back based on erroneous data. The descendants of Jacob Castle and his possibly Native American wife were not connected to Powhatan and the category will be removed unless there is documentation proving a connection.

So what are ste[ to take to solve this cause otherwise my tree is stuck. I will have dna but not sure how that works My brother had his fone and it does have indian heritage in the right percentage to say someone is indian. I also found Saponi tribe is my 5th grand mother in my tree sowege is my 7th. Is that worth putting in the dna groups. I dont want to do all this work to trace back to a dead end. How can we figure it out?

Unknown-341575 and Hokolesqua-6 appear to represent the same person because: unintentional duplicate from my GEDCOM import, because my record was relatively incomplete. They have the same spouse and similar name. No need to keep any of my data.
