According to Mary Jane Hood Bosson, 1909, John was a carpenter by trade but was very active in the various military conflicts. He took part in the French and Indian war (1754-63). He was at the fall of Louisburg in 1758 and at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, also known as the Battle of Quebec, the following year.
During the American revolution (1775–83), John was a guard in Charlestown from November 12 1777 till April 3 1778. In 1789 he was a sergeant in the Essex County Regiment.
