In 1775, he began his service as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Regiment, New York Levies.[4] By Mar 1778, he was promoted to Colonel[5] and was in command of the 6th Regiment of Dutchess Militia, New York.[6][7][1] He remained with the Dutchess Militia until 1781.[8]

In 1784, the Hopkins family moved to Bennington, Vermont.[2][9] The 1800 census lists Roswell as a head of household at Vergennes, Addison, Vermont.[10]

Mary died on 24 Jul 1803, and Roswell remarried, to Mary Lee, widow of Captain Paine Converse.[2] After his second wife died, Roswell married for a third time, to Ruth Squires.[2]
