Roswell Hopkins was born on 13 May 1733 at Waterbury, New Haven County, Connecticut.[1] He was a son of Stephen Hopkins and Jemima (Bronson) Hopkins.[2][3]
Roswell moved with his father's family from Harwinton, Connecticut, to Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York, where he became a prominent citizen. Around 1754, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the Crown, and continued in that capacity for about thirty years, even with his military duties.[2]
About 1752, he married Mary Cook in Harwinton, Litchfield County, Connecticut.[2] The children of Roswell and Mary (Cook) Hopkins were:[2]
Roswell Hopkins was a militia officer during the American Revolution. In 1775, he began his service as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Regiment, New York Levies.[4] By Mar 1778, he was promoted to Colonel[5] and was in command of the 6th Regiment of Dutchess Militia, New York.[6][7][1] He remained with the Dutchess Militia until 1781.[8]
In 1784, the Hopkins family moved to Bennington, Vermont.[2][9] The 1800 census lists Roswell as a head of household at Vergennes, Addison, Vermont.[10]
Mary died on 24 Jul 1803, and Roswell remarried, to Mary Lee, widow of Captain Paine Converse.[2] After his second wife died, Roswell married for a third time, to Ruth Squires.[2]
Roswell Hopkins passed away on 18 May 1827 at Charlotte, Chittenden County, Vermont.[1] He lies buried at Vergennes Burying Ground, Addison County, Vermont.[11]
