Daniel Hough was baptized on 14 Apr 1693 at Buckingham and Falls, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, son of John and Hannah Hough[1][2].
DNA confirmation: As of March 2022, three paternal descendants of John Hough via his son Joseph Hough have Big Y DNA test results with a terminal SNP of I-Y49500. There are presently no Y-DNA tests of paternal descendants of his brother Daniel. Thus the Big Y DNA confirmation is not applicable to the Daniel Hough/Huff lineage.
According to a Doylestown Historical Society paper contributed by an unnamed Hough descendant, our subject, Daniel, I, son of John and Hannah (Worthington) HOUGH of Middletown, Bucks PA, removed to New Jersey. The paper also gave that Daniel married Elizabeth DUDLEY. Being troubled by the Doylestown paper and several traditions, Orvllle Louis Hough wrote that without a shred of evidence Daniel went off in a 'huff" to Burlington, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. However, Daniel Hough was indeed son of John and Hannah by virtue of his birth record [3].
Son of Daniel and Elizabeth seems to be:
Daniel and his brother, Joseph, had both received over 70£ in advance of the father’s death. The reason for the move is actually unknown but is enough evidence to give a beginning to the brothers Daniel and Joseph who then appear in northeastern NC in 1737. It may also explain a disassociation with the Society of Friends.
In the late 1960s and early1970 GWH and OLH also corresponded with Perry Belle (Bennett) Hough of SC who had become a noted local historian and researcher of Lancaster County, SC history. Orville and Granville reviewed this line over the years and by 1985 were ready to accept Daniel and Joseph as "probable" brothers and sons of John and Hannah. Our subject and his brother Joseph migrated into NC by 1737.
Records in North Carolina begin about 1737 for Daniel and Joseph HOUGH/HUFF. Our Daniel's descendants continue with the HUFF in NC and later into the Northwest Territory. Joseph retains HOUGH with settling in the “back” or “up” country of South Carolina on the border of the two Carolinas.
By 1995, Granville Hough concluded that Daniel HOUGH had md (2) [Early-94|Margaret EARLY]], then widow of John BEVERLEY in NC.
On 5 May 1738, Widow Margaret BEVERLY gave her sons John and Robert land she had received from her Beverley husband; witnessed by . Daniel HOUGH, Thomas CREW, and George OUTLAW. Then, on 11 Dec 1738, Daniel and Margaret, as man and wife, sold land she held from her husband to Theophilus PUGH, gentleman of Upper Parish of Nansemond Co, VA. Concurrently, Margaret's two BEVERLEY sons, John and Robert, also sold their interests to Theophilus PUGH. So, this marriage took place between 5 May and 11 Dec 1738. The language of the deeds indicated both were into middle age or beyond. Genealogist Frederick DORNAN traced the BEVERLY chn as far as he could, hoping to find some additional HOUGH reference. He did indeed follow John BEVERLEY, Jr., into Orange Co, NC, where Joseph HOUGH had gone. Then, in 1739, Bertie Co., NC, Elizabeth CHESHIRE an orphan of John CHESHIRE, requested Daniel HOUGH to be her guardian and seven months later Joseph HOUGH sold 140a of his Meherrin River land to Elizabeth CHESHIRE. [4]
Interestingly, the CHESHIREs are recordered in Chesterfield MMs, Burlington, NJ in 1728 ad 1730. In 1728 John Cheshire, Sr. requested permission for John Cheshire, Jr. to travel to North Carolina in search of his future. [5] He may have left around then but there is an additional request in 1730 for permission to marry a Sarah Wright which was given. Whether they followed through or not is uncertain but they clearly knew each other. [6]
Granville Hough continued research on the descendants of John Hough of Middletown, Bucks Co. and rewrote Daniel’s history to include all legal records he could find. Although none show confirmation of the exact relationship of Daniel to Joseph, it is clear that from 1738 until 1755 where Daniel went, Joseph went, or vice versa.
Daniel HOUGH was appointed Constable On 9 Feb 1742, in place of Peter WEST, and he held that office until replaced by James COTTON on 15 Feb 1743. [7].
In 1742, our Daniel of Bertie Co bought 50 acres of land on the Meherrin River Indian Path as had Joseph Hough. He sold this land to William MOORE. [8].
On 17 Mar 1742/43, Daniel HOUGH sold for 3 pounds to William MORRIS, 50 acres on the Old Indian Path at Peter WEST's corner. [9] Note that this William MORRIS may be the same as William MOORE and the Indian Path land although the references are from separate records.
Daniel also made a big purchase of 800 acres of land on 30 Jul 1742 from Thomas JONES of Cape Fear, also stated to be of New Hanover Co. [10]
On 8 Dec 1742, Daniel HOUGH sold 400 acres of this land to Henry WINBURNE and Bryant HARE of Nansemond Co, VA. [NC DB F:391]. (Henry WINBURNE was husband of Sarah HARE]. When Henry WINBURNE divided this land and sold it in 1754, he referred back to his purchase of it from Daniel HOUGH.[11]]. On 8 Dec 1742, Daniel sold the other 400 acres to Benjamin HILL. [12] Benjamin HILL, in turn, sold this land on 6 Aug 1847 to William YATES. [13]
This map shows the nearness and ease of traveling between Nansemond, VA and Bertie Co., NC. At one point Dr. HOough believed that our subject Daniel was the man in New Brunswick, VA which he later corrected.
1733 Map of Nansemond Co. and Bertie Co., NC |
On 23 August 1743, Daniel HOUGH sold to Benjamin HILL, merchant, for 289 pounds, 10 shillings, what must have been his personal estate. It consisted of 9 cows, 6 calves; 4 oxen, 6 years old; 5 oxen, 2 years old; 3 yearlings; 3 cows; 4 feather beds and furniture; 4 iron pots, 1 bell Mettle Motor; 1 whip saw; 1 crosscut saw; 2 large chests; 5 axes; 1 broad axe; 2 tables; 2 dozen pewter plates; 4 large pewter basins; and 1 Negro woman named Bess. This sale was witnessed by John CAMPBELL, merchant, of Edenton and Debt’r John Rodolph STEINFELS of Bertie Co. Proved in May Court, 1744, Benjamin WYNNS, D. C. [DB F:528]. This must have been the final preparation before Daniel HOUGH left the area. It was not described as an estate sale. Benjamin HILL had previously sold land to Joseph HOUGH.
A final deed record shows that on 3 Dec 1743, Daniel HOUGH witnessed the sale of land by William MOORE to Thomas WALKER, some of the same land Daniel had sold to MOORE. Still later, on 21 Oct 1746, Thomas JONES of New Hanover Co, sold to Thomas WALKER 250 acres between John COTTEN, James COTTEN, Daniel HOUGH which suggests he was still a Bertie county landowner. [14]
It is not known how long or where Daniel HOUGH lived after these events. In 1755, Henry WINBURNE and Bryant HARE divided the 400 acres of land they had jointly purchased from Daniel HOUGH, "late of said county". The land was described as being on the Meherrin River, at Hothouse Creek, by the side of the Indian Path. The choice of language could mean that Daniel HOUGH had moved away, or that he had died, but more likely that he had moved away. It may be significant that for that year, 1755, Daniel HUFF and Joseph HUFF appeared on the Orange County tax list. The Orange Co. person could be our subject or his son, Daniel HUFF, who later settled in Stokes Co.
Note that the last two are HUFF whereas they had always been HOUGH previously. HUFFs settled in Orange County (aka Surry, Stokes Cos., Yadkin) and later rejoined the Quaker faith. Joseph HOUGH ended up in Anson County apparently with children and a Negro woman named JANE when he died. His descendants populated SC and other southeastern states, they were slaveholders who did not, or could not afford to release them. Their branches are followed throughout the South.
Interestingly, as with Joseph, Daniel’s personal belongings sold to Benjamin HILL included a Negro woman named BESS. Is the aging Daniel, either with or without a family, “downsizing”? Is he considering a reconnection with the Quaker faith where, in 1754 the Cumberland Dunn MM merged with Cane Creek MM in Orange Co., (records kept in Alamance Co. MM minutes) where his son, Daniel II, lived and his son's second wife, Ann Pike labored to become at one again with the Society of Friends? Was he a widower or did he die?
HOUGH lineage seems to be: Daniel and Elizabeth (Dudley) and Margaret (BEVERLEY) of PA and NJ and NC > John and Hannah (Worthington) Hough of Hough Hamlet, WIlmslow, Cheshire, England and Middletown, Bucks Co., PA

Summary of text: Baptism Record: Daniel Hough was baptized on April 14, 1693, in Buckingham and Falls, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John and Hannah Hough.
DNA Confirmation: As of March 2022, three paternal descendants of John Hough through his son Joseph Hough have undergone Big Y DNA testing, resulting in a terminal SNP of I-Y49500. However, no Y-DNA tests of paternal descendants of his brother Daniel have been conducted, rendering the Big Y DNA confirmation inapplicable to the Daniel Hough/Huff lineage.
Historical Accounts: According to a paper from the Doylestown Historical Society, contributed by an unnamed descendant of the Hough family, Daniel Hough, son of John and Hannah (Worthington) Hough of Middletown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, relocated to New Jersey. The paper also states that Daniel married Elizabeth Dudley. Orville Louis Hough expressed skepticism regarding this account, suggesting that Daniel may have left without concrete evidence in a huff to Burlington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. However, Daniel's lineage is confirmed by his birth record.
Descendants and Migration: Daniel and Elizabeth are believed to have had a son, Daniel II, born around 1720 in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, who later settled in Stokes County, North Carolina. Daniel II married Mary Wherle/Worley in Burlington County, New Jersey, in 1741. The descendants of Daniel II continued the Hough lineage in North Carolina and later migrated to the Northwest Territory.
Land Transactions: Daniel Hough and his brother Joseph received over 70£ in advance of their father's death. The reason for their migration is unclear, but they appeared in northeastern North Carolina by 1737, possibly indicating a disassociation with the Society of Friends.
Later Life: Daniel Hough was appointed Constable in February 1742 and held the position until February 1743. He purchased and sold land in Bertie County, North Carolina, between 1742 and 1743. Records suggest that Daniel may have downsized his estate in preparation for leaving the area.
Legacy and Lineage: The lineage of Daniel Hough extends from Daniel and Elizabeth (Dudley) and Margaret (Beverley) of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina to John and Hannah (Worthington) Hough of Hough Hamlet, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England, and Middletown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Other Records: Additional records show Daniel Hough/Huff's presence in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and Princess Ann County, Virginia, during the early 18th century, indicating a possible birth date/location in Pennsylvania around 1693. Various land transactions and caretaker arrangements suggest Daniel Hough may have had a family during this time, though specifics are unclear.

All other data: deeds, names, places and wife Margaret Beverly match. These two are the same man. The original creator Hopper - seems to be inactive as he has worked with me before and been very helpful. I have tried contact for last 6 wks. Margaret Beverly was not created by Hopper or Breece and need not have the manager name changed. Thank you!! Breece-42

Wouldyou please look at them and merge them, I think we have the same lady. There is a lot of info on Daniel but this might make it easier for you to accept my request. Thanks for contributing her as I had not yet!! Barbara
