Biography

David HOUGH (27 Jan 1723/24 New London, Connecticut[1] - 8 July 1798 Bozrah, CT[2]) was the son of John (Capt) Hough II (1697–1785) and Hannah Denison (1698–1782).

David married twice and had 19 children[3], though not all reached adulthood. He is recorded as Captain David HOUGH, and his military service was in the Connecticut Militia during the war of the revolution.

On 19 May 1748 in New London, Connecticut David married (1) Desire CLARK[4] (14 Oct 1728 Norwich CT - 20 Jan 1764 CT) and they had 12 ch in 16 years.

  1. Lemuel Hough (1 Dec 1748 Norwich Twp, New London, Connecticut[5] - Bozrah, CT) married (1)  ??? and had Mary and Phila. On 18 Feb 1773, he married (2) in Lebanon, NH, (but recorded in Bozrah, CT) Hannah LATHROP, dau of Elisha and Hannah (HOUGH) LATHROP and they had 12 ch: Elizabeth; Borridwell; Guy; Elisha; Dan; Hannah; Levinia; Ira; Polly; Pamelia; Lemuel; and Joseph. He lived in NH for many years but returned to Bozrah in his later years. He and his brother Daniel signed the Lebanon declarations opposing the British early during the Rev. War. They later served in NH units.
  2. EuniceHough (2 Apr 1750 Norwich Twp, New London, Connecticut - 14 Nov 1752).
  3. Daniel Hough (12 Jan 1752 Norwich Twp, New London, Connecticut[6] - 11 Sep 1820 Lebanon, NH). He moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire about 1774. He married Lydia EDGERTON (31 July 1761 Norwich, Connecticut - 12 Mar 1846), dau of Asa and Hannah (GRISWOLD) EDGERTON. Their children were Wade; Philena; Richard Hyde; Clark; Daniel; Sarah; Clark (2); Asa Edgerton; Lydia Edgerton; and Polly. Daniel HOUGH served in Capt HOUSE's Comp, Col BALDWIN's Regt, during the Rev. War, and Lydia received a Widow's pension.
  4. David Hough (13 Mar 1753 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut[7] - 18 Apr 1831 Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire in June 1775, married Abigail HUNTINGTON (5 Jan 1753 Norwich, CT - 1838 NH), daughter of James and Elizabeth (DARBY) HUNTINGTON. David served during the Rev. War in Ira Allen's Regt of VT Militia and as a pvt in Colonel Samuel Herrick’s Regiment of Vermont Militia. Abigail's application for pension was rejected because David's service was not under military obligation. They moved to New Hampshire about 1778, and David served in the state legislature and as a member of Congress. Eunice Hough (2) (21 July 1756 Norwich Twp, New London, Connecticut[8] - ) on 13 Dec 1781 in Bozrah, Connecticut married Oliver LATHROP, son of Deacon Simon and Hannah LATHROP, and moved to Lebanon, NH, then to Sharon. They had 7 LATHROP children: Aurelia; Oliver; Desire; Amanda; Roderick; Elizabeth; and Harriet.
  8. John Hough (28 Dec 1757 Norwich, New London, Connecticut[9] - 19 Nov 1832 Unadilla, New York) was a Rev soldier, Justice of the Peace, member of the state legislature, and Colonel of the local militia. He moved to Unadilla, NY, in 1816. He married on 21 Nov 1782 in Bozrah, CT, Susanna JOHNSON (22 Sep 1760 CT - 15 Nov 1841 NY), and their children were Hannah; Louana; Susanna; Wade; John; Clark; Sophia; David (1); David (2); and Daniel Willes.
  9. Wade Hough (7 Aug 1759 Norwichtown, New London, Connecticut[10] - Jul/Sep 1776 Long Island, buried Bozrah/Throop/Johnson Cem near Norwich, CT) casualty in the Rev War. Wade was unmarried when he was killed as a member of the 8th Connecticut Regiment.
  10. Azel Hough(twin) (5 July 1761 Norwich Twp, New London, Connecticut[11] - 11 Mar 1849 Grafton, Vermont) served in the 20th Connecticut Regiment during the Rev War and married (1) Mary EDGERTON (c 1771 CT - before 1808) and (2) in 1808 Susenna FARR. Mary and Azel's children include Eunice; Azel; Clarissa; Ezra; and Walter. He lived in NH. So far as is known, Susanna had no children
  11. Hannah (twin) (5 July 1761 CT - ) married Josiah HARRIS and had one son, John Hough HARRIS. They had a store and tavern in Canaan, New Hampshire.
  12. Desire Hough (4 Jan 1764 Norwich, Connecticut[12] - 12 Mar 1816) on 15 Nov 1787 in Bozrah, CT, md Capt Uriah DOWNER (11 Nov 1762 - 17 Nov 1825) and their DOWNER ch were Uriah; David Hough; Annice; Hannah; Eunice; Elizabeth; and Desire.

On 24 May 1764 at Bozrahville Congregational Church, Bozrah, New London, Connecticut, David Hough married (2) Jemima (Jemime) BALDWIN[13] (9 Aug 1736 CT - 22 Sep 1816 Bozrah, CT), dau of Thomas and Anna (or Abigail) (BINGHAM) BALDWIN of Bozrah.

Their children were:

  2. Bernice Hough (2) (20 Sep 1766 Norwich, CT - 11 May 1845 Bozrah, CT) on 9 May 1785 md Ebenezer HOUGH (29 Mar 1767 Bozrah - 5 Jul 1846 Bozrah), son of Jabez and Phebe (HARRIS) HOUGH, and they had William; Nancy; Jirah Isham; Jedediah; Jemima; Phebe; Phebe (2); Witherell; George; and Ebenezer.
  3. Thomas Hough (7 July 1768 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut[15] - 28 Apr 1815 Lebanon, NH) md (1) Sarah KIMBALL and had dau Sarah. On 4 Aug 1797, he md (2) Sarah HYDE, dau of Elihu and Sarah (GRISWOLD) HYDE, and had ch: Elihu Hyde; Dyer; and Lucy.
  4. Guy Hough (18 Aug 1771 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut - 22 July 1776).
  5. Sarah Hough (22 May 1773 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut[16] - 19 Apr 1848) on 25 Oct 1795 md Capt Nehemiah WATERMAN, son of Nehemiah and Susanna (ISHAM) WATERMAN, and lived at Bozrah. Their WATERMAN ch were Nehemiah; Eunice; Susanna; Farny H.; and Sarah H.
  6. Frances/Fannie Hough (10 Oct 1776 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut[17] - ) md and lived at Bozrah, CT.
  7. Guy Hough (2) (22 Oct 1779 Norwich Twp, New London, Conneticut[18] - 11 Aug 1877 CT) married Hannah BAILEY, daughter of Joseph and Hannah BAILEY. Children include Mariah H.; John Baily; Thomas Hyde; Jedediah Stark; Frances Desire; David Austin; Hannah Jemima; and Daniel Alanson.
