George was born on 17 Jan 1896 in Elkville, Jackson, Illinois.[1]
His parents were William House and Harriet Gray, and he was the eldest of three children. His siblings were:
He grew up in Elkville, Illinois and began working in area coal mines after he got out of high school He registered for the draft for World War I, but wasn't called to serve.[2] He married Lela Siefert in 1918.[citation needed] and together they had two children:
