James was the son of James Hovey and Priscilla Dane Warner (married 2 November 1670 at Springfield, MA). He was born in 1674 in Brookfield, Worcester, Massachusetts.[1]
He married Deborah Barlow in 1694.[2][3] She passed away in 1749[4][5]
"He was a weaver, and lived in Maiden, Mass., until the summer of 1716, when he removed to Mansfield, Conn., where he was afterward a yeoman....Sept. 28, 1722, for love, he conveyed to his son John Hovey forty acres of land, being part of the one hundred acres he bought of Bowley Arnold; and, for love, he conveyed to his son Daniel Hovey fifty acres of land in Mansfield Feb. 16, 1732-3."[1]
His will was dated 16 February 1762.[17] His executors bond was paid 22 October 1765, therefore he probably died in 1765.[17] One record gives his death as 13 July 1765.[18]
Notes
We know he married at least twice since his will mentions his children "by his first wife."[17] His current wife's name is not mentioned, but he does mention his brother-in-law as "ritchard Dexter." One source gives a marriage to a Susannah Dexter (d. 14 Feb 1768) on 7 May 1751.[19] The name "Susanna" and "Susannah Hovey, widow" appears as executor on several other documents.[17] But wether this is 2nd or 3rd wife in not known for certain. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
