Cordell was born in 1871 at a log cabin near the town of Olympus, Tennessee, which lay in that part of Overton County that became Pickett County in 1879. He was the third of five sons of William Pascal Hull and Mary Elizabeth Riley. [1] [2] [3]

He attended National Normal University in Lebanon, Ohio (formerly Southwestern State Normal College, and most recently Lebanon University, which closed in 1917 and merged with Wilmington College); and graduated in 1891 from Cumberland School of Law. [3] [4]

His career included: [4] [5] [6]

1893-1897: Tennessee House of Representatives.
1898: Captain in the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, serving in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.
1903-1907: Judge for Fifth Judicial Circuit Court of Tennessee
1907-1921 / 1923-1931: Eleven terms in U.S. House of Representatives.
1921-1924: Chairman of the Democratic National Committee
1930-1933: U.S. Senator from Tennessee
1933-1944: Secretary of State
1945: Nobel Peace Prize for co-initiating the United Nations

Cordell passed away in 1955 and is buried in the vault of the Chapel of St. Joseph of Arimathea in the Washington National Cathedral. [7]

The Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park is located at Byrdstown, Tennessee. [8]
