Biography

Robert was born in about 1522,[1] possibly at the family's seat in Norbury, Cheshire England. His parents were Hamnet/Hamon Hyde and Margaret Warren.[1][2]

He married Jane Davenport.[1][3][2] This was most likely his first marriage (Ormerod/Helsby indicate his first marriage was to Margaret Dukenfield, but this is not possible as Margaret was still unmarried when her father, Robert, made his will in 1547).[4] Robert's marriage to Jane may have taken place in about 1542, given that eldest son Robert was born in 1543.

Robert and Jane had the following children:[1][2]

He next married, perhaps around 1562, Margaret Dukenfield of Dukenfield.[1][5][6]

He then married, say around 1564, a daughter of Sneyde of Bradwell, Staffordshire.[1]

He then married, say around 1566, Katherine Cholmondeley, sister of Sir Hugh Cholmondeley of Cholmondeley, Cheshire.[1]

He then married, say around 1568, UNKNOWN Spurstowe, daughter of Spurstowe of Spurstow, Cheshire.[1]

Robert died 17 January 1570/1,[1] probably at Norbury.

Research Notes

  • The 1613 Visitation of Cheshire records that Robert Hyde of Norbury was the husband of Katherine Dukenfield.[7] If so, this was likely his first marriage. However, Katherine was the aunt of Margaret Dukenfield, so if Robert had been married to Katherine, he would not have been able to marry Margaret under canon law at the time, as they were closely related by affinity. Hi Nic, I'm looking at unmerged matches. Margaret Dukenfield and Catherine Dunkenfield are set as an unmerged match. Based on the info in Robert Hyde's biography, it seems like they should be merged, but I haven't checked the sources. Thanks, Gillian.

Hi Gillian, thanks for the message. I've been looking at this on and off for the past few days. It's a tough nut to crack. The sources conflict in terms of who married Robert Hyde. Perhaps both of them did (although as Katherine and Margaret were aunt and niece, Margaret's marriage to Robert would have required a dispensation is he had previously married Katherine). But irrespective of their marriages, I think the 1580 Cheshire visitation provides sufficient evidence that Katherine and Margaret Dukenfield were two separate people (ie aunt and niece). I've added appropriate research notes and set them to a rejected match. I also found another duplicate, Margaret Catherine Dukenfield, which from the birth date matches Katherine better than Margaret, so have requested a merge. Thanks

Thanks Nic for taking to time to work on this :-)

Unlikely to have married four times. Profile presumably the result of mergers where a number of individuals are conflated.

Edit: Sorry make that five times.
