Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
Lawrence Hyde was born in Cheshire, England.

Lawrence was the son of Hamnet Hyde and Margaret Warren. There is very little documentation about Lawrence, although he is shown in Ormerod's tree.[1]

He had an elder brother Robert, whose age was given as 7 in 22 Henry VIII, the regnal year from 22 Apr 1530 - 21 Apr 1531, so Lawrence was probably born some time around 1525, probably at the family's seat in Norbury, Cheshire. His brother married five times, and had 10 children with Margaret Dukinfield, whereas Lawrence reamined a bachlor and had no recorded children.

He is mentioned in the will[2] of Dame Mary Egerton (1514-), daughter of Richard Grosvenor of Eaton and widow of Sir Richard Egerton of Ridley, her second husband.

Her will mentions Lawrence Hyde twice - firstly as a tenant of a messuage in Prestbury, late the inheritance of John Booth deceased, and secondly as a servant to whom the testatrix leaves a legacy of £20.

The will is dated 18 Oct 1597, so his date of death is after that.

There is also a Lawrence Hyde mentioned in the church accounts of Prestbury covering nine years from 1563 to 1572[3]

There were a number of other Lawrence Hydes who were much more prominent, especially Lawrence Hyde (abt.1511-1590) his uncle, the third son of his grandfather Robert by a second marriage, who moved to Wiltshire and rose to eminence and riches thanks to the influence of the Thynne family. His children and further descendants reached even greater heights, the most illustrious being his grandson the 1st Earl of Clarendon, Lord Chancellor and Clarendon's daughter Anne who married King James II and was the mother of Queen Mary and of Queen Anne. Many others in the family were in senior positions as judges, Members of Parliament and churchmen.
