Biography

Samuel is the child of Jonathan Ingalls and Martha Jane Locke. He was living at Dunham in the Canadian province of Quebec, in 1809, and in western New York after 1818. He was an "Unlearned Poet" A Copyrighted Edition of his works being published at Angelica, NY, in 1825.1[1]

Update of Samuels Ingalls 1/27/2014

See his father Jonathan for a complete account of the family.

If you follow Richard W Musgrove In the Book History of the town of Bristol, Grafton County, New Hampshire (1904), by Musgrove, Richard W. (Richard Watson), 1840-1914;

3. Samuel m. Betsy a daughter of John Clough.4

To his death he and his wife state they were born in 1775 on Censuses, and Married in 1802 in Sandown, Rockingham New Hampshire; Further their Marriage license says they were both of Sandown.

If you follow Geo. E. Dunbar account of Samuel in The Genealogy and History of the Ingalls Family in America Giving the descendants of Edmund Ingalls who settled in Lynn, Mass, in 1629, Geo. E. Dunbar, Malden, Mass., 1903.;

Samuel prob. m. Margaret, daughter of Joseph Jackman. He was living at Dunham, P, Q, in 1809, and in western New York after 1818. He was an "Unlearned Poet" A Copyrighted Edition of his works being published at Angelica, NY, in 1825.7

First off he says prob. m. Margaret, daughter of Joseph Jackman.

Then he says what he knew; "He was living at Dunham, P, Q, in 1809, and in western New York after 1818. He was an "Unlearned Poet" A Copyrighted Edition of his works being published at Angelica, NY, in 1825."

To get the story you have to google "Dunham, P, Q". The translation you get from google is; Dunham is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec.

This fits exactly the Ingalls record here at The Laura Ingalls Wilder website;

http://www.dahoudek.com/LIW/default.aspx

In reguards to the marriage in Quebec, and the births for there first childern in Canada. Thereafter they show up in New York as stated by Dunbar. I have no doubt in my mind now that the Samuel he speaks of was correct. But like both Authors, they got it half right; ie it wasn't Jackman, it was DELANO.

Further, let me conclude; My Great-grand-mother she never wrote about Laura Ingalls Wilder because she probably never heard of her in her time, nor had anybody she was speaking too; as they were all doing their own version of Little House in the Big Woods then. Samuels' Branch was back East writing Poems as they were settling the Midwest.

But I have to admit, I just wanted to make double sure of all of this in my own mind and I respect their side of the Family to record their History as it happened. The only thing I fear at this Point is Hiram, Sr. son of Samuel & Margaret. They filed their Son of the American Revolution on Margaret Jackman, it's the same Hiram and that brach is lost. [2]

Ferdous-1 and Ingalls-24 appear to represent the same person because: I did not think the information was added to the system so I added it again

I collected data on all Ingalls as I had time in the past. Can send you what I have on Benjamin's Ancestors, Descendants, and siblings as charts or books or a gedcom file if you ask.

I can add info to your pages some of which I got from the Laura Ingalls Wilder site and some of which my grandmother copied from the old Ingalls Smith Bible in Cuba New York. Jonathan is the father of the Samuel Ingalls you have referenced born in 1771. Samuels mother was Martha Jane Locke. My great great grandmother was Margaret Malina Ingalls who married Renselar Smith.
