Biography

Samuel H Irby was born the 21st of August 1821 in Halifax County, Virginia. He was the son of William Morgan Irby and Mary Tune. In 1850 he is found in large household of Irby's,[1] none of which are his parents. Samuel was twenty-eight years old and working as a Carpenter.

Samuel had moved to Tennessee by 1860, and was living in District 1, Carroll County.[2] He was working as an Overseer and had personal estate valued at $30. In the house with him were Elizabeth (24) of Mississippi, Margaret (5) born Mississippi/Missouri, and James (3) born in Tennessee. Ten years later Samuel was still living in District 1, in Gibson County.[3] At age fifty, he was working as a Farmer and had real estate valued at $1,000. His wife Nancy (40) was keeping house, his daughter Maggie (16) was at home, and his son James (12) was working as a Farm Laborer. In the home with them was James McSewon who was also working as a Farm Laborer.

Samuel passed away three years after the 1870 census was taken. A bond was signed by J W Mills, G W Mills, and E H Williams in Gibson County, Tennessee for the amount of Twenty-five hundred dollars to administrate the estate of Samuel Irby.[4]
