Biography

Birth

Various sources put Abner T. Jenkins' birth date as somewhere between 1819 and 1824. The only source to give an exact date is the relatively recent metal replacement grave marker on his grave in Galloway Cemetery which says he was born 16 Sep 1821.[1] The various censuses put his birth at various dates between 1819 and 1824.[2][3] [4][5]

Death and Burial

There are conflicting sources for the death date of Abner Jenkins which is perhaps due in part to the multiple people residing in St. Tammany and Washington parishes at the time which had the names Abner Jenkins as some part of their name. There are at least 3 profiles on WikiTree of persons named Abner Jenkins living in Washington Parish and St. Tammany Parish and dying between 1877 and 1899.

There are also 3 death dates for Abner Jenkins found in various genealogies and sources for this period:

  • 7 Apr 1877 - This date comes from a photograph of a wooden grave marker from the Old Jenkins Cemetery on Find a Grave[11] which reads
Abner Jenkins born APR.24.1795 died APR.7.1877
This is his father Abner Ernst Jenkins Sr (1795 - 1877)
This is almost certainly the gravemarker for Abner Ernest Jenkins, Sr. as he is the only one of the three born before 1800 and Doris Holden who has extensively researched the family has established that the cemetery is located on land once owned by Abner Ernest Jenkins, Sr.[12]
  • 28 May 1881 (or more properly 23 May 1881) - This date comes from an article in the St Tammany Parish Farmer newspaper on 28 May 1881 which reads:
We learn that Mr. Abner Jenkins, aged about fifty years, accidentally lost his life last Monday evening [May 23, 1881], at his home on Bogue Chitto. He was in his mill grinding corn, when the building was blown down by the high wind prevailing, at the time, and he was crushed beneath the falling timbers. Mr. Jenkins was an old and highly respected citizen of the parish, and his death is universally regretted.
  • Apr 1899 - This date comes from a metal plate currently in the Galloway Cemetery in Washington Parish, Louisiana, USA. That marker is clearly not an original marker, but a more recent replacement. [1] It is not clear what the dates on that marker are based on, but the marker is next to and similar in form to a metal plate marker for Jane P. S. Jenkins, the wife of Abner Ernest Jenkins, Jr.

As Abner Ernest Jenkins, Jr. was the only person with the name Abner Jenkins anywhere near the age of fifty residing in the area at the time of the 1881 newspaper article, it seems most likely that he was the man killed when the mill was blown down on 23 May 1881. However, as Abner Ernest Jenkins, Jr.'s wife, Jane Pearlie Simmons is buried next to the Abner Jenkins grave in Galloway Cemetery in Washington Parish with the Apr 1899 death date and there is a similar metal grave marker for Jane, it is possible that Abner Ernest Jenkins, Jr died in Apr 1899 and the Abner Jenkins who died in 1881 was the Abner Jenkins who lived in Washington Parish at the time and was born between 1807 and 1813 according to the census, although he would have been at least 68 at the time of the newspaper article.

Research Notes

  1. . Abner T. Jenkins and Abner Jenkins are often confused or conflated into a single person. Some genealogies have Susanna Jane Finney married to Abner Ernest Jenkins, Jr., who was born 16 Sep 1821 in St. Tammany Parish, La., but he was in St. Tammany Parish at the time of the 1850 census married to Jane Pearly Simmons.[13] while the Abner Jenkins who was the husband of Susanna Finney was living with his new wife in her father's household in Washington Parish at the time of the 1850 census.[14] Given the two 1850 census entries and the conflicting marriages, these are clearly two different men.
  2. . The 1880 census for an Abner Jenkins at David Magee Mill in Washington Parish, Louisiana is for Abner Jenkins (c. 1807-1881). It includes other persons in the household for that Abner's wife and children.[15] The 1880 census for Abner Ernest Jenkins and his wife Jane Pearlie and their children has been found in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.[5]
