Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1647 or later. Most sources give her birth location as Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. Her father was Edward Jessup. Her mother’s maiden name may have been Burroughs.

She married Thomas Hunt jr. In 1665, in Westchester, New York. It is assumed they lived at West Farms. Elizabeth was mentioned in her father’s will which was proven in 1666. In 1688 Thomas Hunt jr. received from his father Thomas 100 acres in West Farms, south of Gabriel Leggett's lot #11, and meadow bounded east and south by Bronx River. The deed was signed by Elizabeth.[1] This was the area that became known as Hunt's Point, and later the main produce market of New York City. West Farms and Hunt’s Point remained in the family for several generations.

West Farms was originally located in Westchester County, until 1873 when it was annexed by New York City. In 1898 it was incorporated into Bronx County.

The patent for West Farms was granted to John Richardson and Edward Jessup (on) April 25, 1666. 'Bounded east by the river called by the Indians Aquehung, otherwise Bronks river, westerly by a little brook called by the Indians Sackwrahung, and southward to the Sound at East river, including a certain neck called Quinahung.’...The whole was divided in 1669, Thomas Hunt having the part still known as 'Hunt's Point.[2]

Research notes

There is confusion between this Elizabeth Jessup, who married Thomas Hunt, and Elizabeth Ann Jessup, who married Ralph Hunt (called London Ralph) born in 1613. It was John Jessup’s daughter, Elizabeth Ann, who married Ralph Hunt. (recent dna research disproves a family connection between this Thomas Hunt and Ralph Hunt. See notes here Thomas Hunt.

Elizabeth ‘s mother’s identity

Elizabeth was born in 1647. Edward’s wife Elizabeth Bridges Beacham was born not before 1645. Obviously this was his second wife, and not Elizabeth ‘s birth mother. Edward’s first wife’s maiden name may have been Burroughs. US Marriages Before 1700 lists her as Burroughs. So far nothing more about her has been found.

Elizabeth was born in 1644 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony.

When Elizabeth was 22 she married Thomas Hunt in June 1666 in Westchester, New York. The couple had one child: Abigail Hunt.[3]

Elizabeth died at the age of 75 on 1 August 1719 in Westchester, New York.[4]

Jessup-1156 and Jessup-35 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date, spouse. My apologies for prematurely adding this profile. Defer to better sourced Jessup-35 for Biography, and dates. Thanks.

Jessup-216 and Jessup-35 appear to represent the same person because: This needs to be merged down. The Connecticut birth makes much more sense for this English family at this early date. New York was New Netherland in 1640s, mostly Dutch, and mostly wilderness. Thanks!
