Biography

Full name was Johannes Matthäus Jochem (Joachim/Yoakum).

This profile accepts the premise that THIS Matthias Yoakum is not descended from Hendrick Joachim who emigrated to New Amsterdam. The Hendrick reported by Dr. Smith as the immigrant is actually a woman.

Birth. He was born in Germany around 1698. His birth year, 1698, comes from a court record found by Sarah Patton in Bedford County Courthouse, Virginia from August 3, 1765 where he says his own age is 66 years old:

"Mathias Yoakum aged 66 years Deposeth & saith that some time before last Christmas he Lost a Sorrel horse with a blaze in his face which he Verely [sic] believes - Simeon Cooper & Silus Cooper had Stole from him & further Saith not.--his Mark Mathias M Yoakum."[1]

Father's Name. Mathias father's name comes from a record of a baptism attended by he and Barbara (Johann Matthes Jochem and his wife Maria Barbara Ohngefehr): Cited as "Johann Matthes Jochem, true surviving son of the former Philip Jochem of Mörs"

1st marriage He married in 1721 Maria Barbara Ohngefehr (or Ungefehr), "true surviving daughter of the former Friedrich Ohngefehr, citizen and member of the Court in Edigheim" They married in Edigheim, Bayern, Germany. (Note: Edigheim is no longer part of Bayern(Bavaria) but now in the state of Rheinland-Pflatz, always considered region of Palatine).

Their children were Valentine and Philip Paul. German church records show their baptisms:

1722 -------ch. son Valentin Jochem christened 08 Sep 1722 in Edigheim
1723 -------ch. son Philip Paul Jochem christened 01 Nov 1723

Immigration.

1724-1726ish -----Mathias and his family emigrated to British Colonial America (estimated date)
1724-1726ish -----Maria Barbara died at sea (according to Helen Yoakum Black letters)

2nd Marriage.

1727-1729ish -----m. Eleanor (possibly Zeh/See although this is not proven as her last name. Helen Yoakum Black calls his 2nd wife "an Irish girl.")

Some researchers dispute Eleanor's last name. The Zeh/Sees were close neighbors in the South Branch Valley (WV), but there is no proof that she was a Zeh/See. The argument is that the Zehs were not in the area until after 1748 so it would have been very unlikely for her to have married Jochem in 1727.

Mathias in public records:

19 May 1768 ------Constable, vice Jno Neeley
29 Jan 1780--------will written in Botetourt county, Virginia.

Deaths.

1782 -----------------Given as Eleanor's death date, but she is still named in probate so still living.
18 Feb 1783 -------will probated in Lincoln, Kentucky. (I would assume that would be where he died, but other researchers have Botetourt, Virginia, where he wrote his will. Unresolved so far.)

Note: after 1756, Matthias Yoakum, Jr, son of Matthias and Eleanor, begins to appear in county records in VA and KY. Therefore researchers need to look for other clues to tell which Matthias is referred to.

Moravian Diaries of Travels Through Virginia. Extracts from the Diary of Leonhard Schnell and John Brandmueller of Their Journey to Virginia, Oct 12 - Dec 12, 1749
November 3rd, 1749 we met accidentally John Becker, of Menising [Minnisinks] who had run away from there, and by way of "Schomokin" [Shamokin] had come to the South Branch. We reminded him of what he had heard of the Lamb. He told us his inward and outward need. Finally we came to the house of Matthias Joachim (YOKUM). The man himself was not at home, but the mother with her children received us very kindly. After a while the mother said: "My dear people, we hear much evil of you. Again a book has reached us in which many bad things are told about you." But the son said: "Let that be; we have never heard anything wrong from these people in their sermons. They are all right, etc." We stayed there over night.
On Sunday, November 5th, I preached in Joachim's house... In the afternoon we continued our journey, and stayed over night with Michael Ernst. [Harness?]
On November 6th, we continued up along the South Branch through the Gap. On the way we visited the sister of my father-in-law. ... Above the Gap we came to the Germans, where we called on George Zeh (See)....
On November 7th, ... In the afternoon we went back part of the way to Mr. Joachim, where we had appointed a sermon. George Zeh took us twice through the river on horses.
On November the 8th I preached at Joachim's. ...
