Date Estimated based on historical events and/or calculated by ages of other family members.Note: Birth date guess of "about 1555" is a rounding of the Feb./April 1554 date given in his biography at the History of Parliament Online, which was "estimated from fa.’s i.p.m."

Biography

Thomas Jones was the son of Sir Henry Jones (Syr Hari or Harry Johnes of Abermarlais, Kt., Sheriff of Carmarthenshire) by Henry's first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Herbert and Mary Gamage.[1][2] Thomas was born about Feb./Apr. 1554, based on information from his father's inquisition post mortem.[3]

Thomas was knighted in 1584 and served two terms in Parliament for Carmarthenshire (1586 and 1587). He was sheriff of Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire.[3][4]

Sir Thomas Johnes of Abermarlais married Jane, daughter and heiress of Rowland Puleston.[3] Jane's mother was "Annes ferch Rowland Griffith."[5]

Thomas and Jane were married on November 4, 1576, St. Ishmael, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Their daughter Elizabeth is alleged to have been born December 24, 1595.[6] They had five sons and two daughters[3] (five sons and three daughters listed by Rowland: Elizabeth[7] and Mary, twins, and Agnes, who is probably the Ann named in his will[8]).

Children of Sir Thomas of Abermarlais and Jane:[9]

  • Sir Henry Jones, m (1) a da. of Richard Herbert; (2) a da. of Sir Henry Williams[8][10]
  • Thomas Jones, m but left no issue[8]
  • Rowland Jones, m but left no issue[8]
  • Richard Jones, died s.p.[8]
  • Herbert Jones, M.A., m Susan, da. of John Jones[8]
  • Elizabeth Jones, m Sir William Aubrey[8]
  • Mary Jones (twin of Elizabeth), m Rhydderch Gwynn[8]
  • Agnes Jones, m (1) Sir George Mortimer; (2) John Stedman[8]

Sons Henry (eldest), Rowland, Richard and Herbert, and daughter Ann were named in his will.[11]

Sir Thomas Jones died between making his will, March 7, 1604, and its proof, May 18, 1604. He asked to be buried in the parish church of Llansadorne, left small bequests for the repair of St. David’s cathedral and the parish church and to certain servants; annuities of £20 each to his sons Rowland, Richard and Herbert; £500 to his daughter Anne, and the residue to the sole executor, his elder son, Sir Henry Jones. A codicil provided for household stuff in ‘the house in Caernarvon’ to go to his widow. An inquisition post mortem was taken at Carmarthen, Sept. 29, 1604.[3]

Thomas's widow, Jane (Puleston) Jones, married William Maurice[12] (William ap Morus[13]).

Jane, daughter of "Roland Puleston of Caernarfon Sh. 1575" and Annes f Roland, married (1) Sir Tos. Jones ap Harry ap Tos.[14] (2) Sir William (1604/5).[15]

Note: His mother, Elizabeth nee Herbert, is the daughter of Matthew and Mary (Gamage) Herbert. Lewis (below) shows Matthew & Mary's marriage as 1548, but that is not correct (other sources show their son born before that date). Although Lewis has a citation for Richardson following the sentence with that date, Richardson shows only that they married (no date given).

Jones-89834 and Johnes-8 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same daughter. Guidance needed from the Wales Project about the preferred LNAB. Thanks for reviewing.
