Biography

James Kilgore lived in Appalachia, in Pennsylvania.

Note: Emigrated to Newton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania with his brothers Charles and Samuel after the death of their father in 1731.

The three Kilgore brothers: James, Charles and Samuel were living in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1734. They were, most likely, born in Ireland of Scottish parents and came to this country between 1710 and 1730.

From "History of Cumberland and Adams counties, Pennsylvania," "Hopewell Township, 1762: ... James Jack, James Kilgore...."

"On the Letort, near Middlesex, James Davison lived in 1736, a little south of the fording place where the road from Harris' ferry crossed the run. The land in this vicinity is said to have been thickly settled before Carlisle was laid out. Patrick and William Davison, William Gillingham, James Gillgore (or Kilgore), Joseph Clark, Peter Wilkie and John McClure owned land near the proposed site of Carlisle...."

James married Elizabeth Jack. Some old traditions said James and Elizabeth were parents of eighteen sons and one daughter. James' will names only thirteen children. Elizabeth's will names twelve children but it is known that one child, Ezekiel, died after James' death and before she wrote her will. Sources that say James had eighteen or more children usually say that James was married twice and that Elizabeth Jack was his second wife. That has NOT been proven. In fact, the person who wrote about the possibility of another wife later said it was not true. James died September 1771 in Newton Township. James signed his will James Kilgoar. It has never been proven that his middle name was William, even though it has been used in various histories for many years. Elizabeth's will was proved February 14, 1792 in Carlisle, Newton Township.

The KIilgores were members of Big Spring Presbyterian Church in Newville, Pennsylvania and are believed to be buried there but there are no gravestones for them in the church cemetery. There are, however, many old markers that are no longer legible.

The only certain birth dates for children of James Kilgore and Elizabeth Jack Kilgore are those of David Kilgore, Jesse Kilgore and William Kilgore. The birthdates for the other children are approximate dates that are not proven.

  • From: Blunston Licenses and Their Background:

"The land beyond the Susquehanna River was ceded to the Proprietaries of Pennsylvania by the Indians of the Six Nations of New York, on the 11th of October 1736 - "releasing all said River Susquehanna: and lands lying on both sides to extend eastward as far as the heads of the branches or springs which run into said Susquehanna, and all lands lying west of the said River to the setting of the sun, and to extend from the mouth of the said River northward up the same hills or mountains called by the Six Nations the Tyun-nun-ta-sacta or endless hil (sic) and by the Delaware's Kep-pack-ta-nan-in-Hill" (Kittochtinny or later Kittatinny).

Samuel Blunton as Magistrate duly recorded the Licenses begun January 1733.... Within rather recent times they (the books) have become the property of Pennsylvania and the Blunston license Books are now in the Department of Internal Affairs.

The usual acreage was from 200 to 500 acres.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

I don't have a problem merging Kilgore-1618 and Kilgore-47. Of course, they're the same person. But after we do so, we shall really need to clean up the information.
