Update as to Parentage

At times, the association of Henry Kingsbury of Ipswich and Haverhill with the three older early Kingsbury immigrants--Henry of Assington and Boston, and John and Joseph Kingsbury of Dedham--as well as his relation to James of Boxford, Suffolk, England has been elusive. In 2005, Robert Charles Anderson believed the immigrant was related to the Kingsburys from that area, but he could not further define those relationships.[1] A Spring 2021 article[2] by Melinde Lutz Byrne and John Edward Hardy in New England Historical and Genealogical Register shows the three older Kingsbury immigrants are the sons of James of Boxford, Suffolk, England, and that this, the younger Henry Kingsbury is the son of Henry Kingsbury of Assington and his first wife, Jane Warren. Thus Henry of Ipswich and Haverhill is the grandson named in the 1622 will of James Kingsbury of Boxford. See Research Notes and Kingsbury 2021 Update.

Biography

Henry Kingsbury was born about 1615,[3][4][5][6] presumably Suffolk, England, the son of Henry Kingsbury and his first wife, Jane Warren.[7]

Henry's grandfather, James Kingsbury of Boxford, died in 1622, leaving a will by which he made bequests to both Henry and his father,[8]

To Henrie Kingsberie, my sonne, one bullock of a year old, one mare and colt of five years of age and eight bushels of barely, bing now in his hands. To Henrie Kingsberie, my grandchild, a one year old Bullock.

Immigration

The details of Henry's immigration are not known. His father and second wife, Margaret (Blythe) Alabaster, together with two young children, immigrated 1630 aboard the Talbot, sailing as part of Winthrop's Fleet.[9] Henry and Margaret settled at Boston, where the elder Henry served the Governor's family through at least 1636 in different capacities, frequently involving livestock.[10]

Joseph B. Felt (1834) placed Henry Kingsbury among the first settlers of Ipswich, there by 1638.[11][12]

At Massachusetts Bay Colony

Henry Kingsbury married, probably Ipswich, say 1640, Susan French. She was baptized St. Edmund's Parish in Assington, Suffolk, 22 April 1616, the daughter "Thomas Ffrench and Susan his wife."[13][14][15] Thomas and Susan (Rigglesdale) French, and their family, were early immigrants to Massachusetts Bay. By 1636, Susan and most of the French family had "assembled at Ipswich."[16]

On 8 February 1648, Henry sold his 32 acre farm at Ipswich to Thomas Safford, and on 31 March 1648, he "bought of Daniel Ladd, of Haverhill, 'house and land on High St. in Ipswich.'"[17]

On 19 December 1648, Henry Kingsbury subscribe 2s to the Major Denison fund.[18]

Also in 1648, Henry Kingsbury of Rowley, being "late of Ipswich"), "and Susan his sold six acres to Reinold Foster."[19],

With other inhabitants of Ipswich, Henry Kingsbury signed a petition of 17 May 1658, claiming the right to vote and saying they had all taken the oath of fidelity, but were not made freeman.[20]

WIP---

In 1900, Arthur E. Gage wrote,[21]

John Gage and Henry Kingsbury occupied adjoining farms on the Merrimack in that part of the town of Rowley afterward Bradford. John Gage purchased his farm from Patience Jewett and Hannah (Jewett) Carlton. Henry Kingsbury's farm originally belonged to Philip Nelson.

Susan (French) Kingsbury died Haverhill, then Norfolk, Massachusetts Bay, 21 February 1678;[22] Henry survived her. He died Haverhill, 1 October 1687.[23][24] The inventory of Henry's estate was taken 10 October 1687 by Josiah Gage and Jonathan Haynes; Joseph "Kinsbury" was appointed administrator.[25]

Family

Henry Kingsbury and Susan French married, probably Ipswich, say 1640. They were the parents of at least seven children.

  1. Susannah Kingsbury, born, probably Ipswich, about 1641/2
  2. John Kingsbury, born, probably Ipswich, say 1643
  3. Ephraim Kingsbury, born, probably Ipswich, say 1645
  4. James Kingsbury, born, probably Ipswich, say 1647
  5. Samuel Kingsbury, born Ipswich, 25 March 1649
  6. Thomas Kingsbury, born say 1651
  7. Joseph Kingsbury, born Haverhill, about 1656 (he was age 85 at his death in 1741).

Research Notes

Variance as to his birth. The published Haverhill account of his death places his birth as early as about 1610. See Vital Records of Haverhill, Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849 2:434, [26] Based on his testimony in 1669,[27] Henry was "aged about fifty-four years." so born about 1615.

Kingsbury Gage connection. Susan's sister Amee/Amy married John Gage.[28] In the matter of Simon Bradstreet vs. John Gage. (Ipswich, March Term, 1669), Alexander Session swore in court regarding statements made by "Goodman Goodman Kingsboroughs sonne" in 1665.[29][30]

... deponent further witnesseth that in ye yeere sixty fiue he saw a parcel of Swine by ye river side .... & Goodman Kingsboroughs sonne sayd they were his unkle Gage's hoggs, and Daniel Gage vpon his descritio sayd he thought they were theirs."
From the information in Session's deposition, Henry Kingsbury's wife has sometimes been published as "Gage" or "?Gage." Based on the works surveyed by Torrey, New England Marriages Prior to 1700 (2015) has the surname "Gage?"[31]

Marriage date. A previous version of this profile reported his marriage to Susannah at Ipswich, 1635.

The profile of Henry Kingsbury of Assington and Boston has been updated to reflect changes outlined in Kingsbury 2021 Update.

The changes to the profile include reporting this Henry of Ipswich and Haverhill as his son.

Hoping to learn if anyone. especially the several on this Trusted List, objects to linking this Henry of Ipswich and Haverhill to his father, Henry of Assington and Boston.

Note: As part of the update, his wife, now Susannah Gage will be merged into the profile of Susan French, the daughter of Thomas French and Susan Rigglesdale. See Kingsbury 2021 Update. and the information on the profile of Henry Kingsbury of Assington and Boston

Have posted reasoning and proposed changes to this Henry Kingsbury's marriage and ancestry on G2G as "Comments on Henry Kingsbury."

The proposed changes include:

1. Linking this Henry (b. 1615) as son of Henry (died after 1636).
2. Merging his wife, now Susannah (Gage) Kingsbury into Susan French, bp. Assington, Suffolk, 2 April 1616. so that his wife will appear, Susan (French) Kingsbury.
3. Merging the profile of James Kingsbury's son, Henry Kingsbury (b. about 1587) into Henry Kingsbury (d. after 1636). Note: Thus Henry Kingsbury, b. 1615, will become recognized as the grandson of that name mentioned in James Kingsbury's will.
4 Creating new profile, "Jane Warren," ancestry unknown, who marries 5 December 1613 Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, England, Henry Kingsbury (d. after 1636), as his first wife. Attach Jane (Warren) Kingsbury as the mother of this Henry Kingsbury, b. 1615.
5 Reassessing birth data for Henry Kingsbury, d. after 1636 in light of new first marriage date.

Please comment here or on G2G if you have questions. --Genej

So, what about the Henry Kingsbury who came to Massachusetts in 1630 with wife Margaret (Alabaster) and two children - likely James (8) and Sarah (4), and who was a close friend of John Winthrop? According to John's will, a Henry Kingsbery was a "kinsman" of himself and his brother James. Was this the Henry husband of Margaret, the Henry of this profile, or yet some other Henry?

The 1905 Genealogy shows a Henry born 1595 to James and Ann, which would make him the right age and the brother of James and John. Seems like he deserves a profile - he was a real person, even if we aren't exactly sure of his relationship to the others.

Just in case anyone is wondering this too, 4 years later...please refer to Anderson's "Great Migration" with primary sources. The Henry of Boxford (son of James), Henry of Boston (husband of Margaret Alabaster Blyth & friend of the Winthrops) and Henry of Ipswich & Haverhill (this profile) are presumed to be 3 different men, but very possibly related in some way to each other and to brothers John & Joseph of Dedham. Henry of Boxford was born well before 1601 per his father's 1622 will; Henry of Ipswich was born between about 1610 and 1615 per his own court deposition and Ipswich vital record of his death and this was the Henry referred to as Kinsman in John Kingsbury's will. Henry of Boston disappeared from records after 1636 so is NOT Henry of Ipswich. Was Henry of Boston also Henry of Boxford? Unknown to this date and Anderson says as much, possible but not proven, more research is needed.
