Jean-Baptiste Lesieur was born 27 Jul 1686 in Bastican, to Charles Lesieur and Françoise Lafond.
He married Élisabeth Rivard dite Laglanderie, the daughter of Julien Rivard dit Laglanderie & Elisabeth Tune(z) dite Dufresne in 1707. They had 14 children.
He died April 22, 1740 in Yamachiche,
From a letter dated 23 September 1984 written to Mary Elizabeth "Peggy" Desaulniers Brandt by Gerald R.L. Desaulniers, who with his brother Lionel E. L. Desaulniers researched the Desaulniers family all over the world from the end of F.L. Desaulniers (author of Les Vieilles Familles D'Yamachiche) to the present day:
During the reign of Louis XIII of France, fifteen years after the treaty of St-Germain-en-Laye by which England returned Canada and Acadia to France, and five years after Maissonneuve founded Montreal, Charles Lesieur was born in the Parish of D’Osville, Coutances Diocese, Lower Normandy, France in 1647.
After coming to Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada in 1670, he was conceded “un arrière-chef” by Jesuit Richard. It was at this point he was given the title “Sieur de la Pierre.”
In 1672 he made an advantageous marriage with Françoise de LaFond, daughter of Etienne de LaFond and Marie Boucher, who was the sister of Pierre Boucher, Governor of Trois-Rivières. This connection allowed him to increase considerably his land holdings. He soon acquired “un autre domaine”—this time in Batiscan with the Jesuits. He was charged with much of the business and land administration for the Jesuits. By 1869 he had become Royal notary and official tax collector (Procureur fiscal).
Death came early to Charles at fifty years of age on 15 January 1697, leaving François with eight children. Charles, first born son, was 23 years old at the time. Julien, the second son, was 20.
Jean-Baptiste, born 27 July 1686, our direct line sire and the first Desaulniers, was only 11 years old.
When in 1702 Pierre Boucher, Governor of Trois Rivières, realized that his niece Marie and her young family had worked hard and survived well for five years after the death of Charles, he called Charles and Julien, the two oldest sons, to Boucherville, at which time he allocated a “Seigneurie” to them in Yamachiche. The transfer and ownership of this land automatically conferred on them the title of Seigneur. By 1703, Charles and Julien moved on to their land in Yamachiche and with the help of “censitaires” started to remove the brush.
On 20 July 1707, Jean-Baptiste, our direct sire, married Élisabeth Rivard-Laglanderie. He had a place near the river where alder trees abounded, hence Des aulnes became Desaulniers. Jean-Baptiste took the name Desaulniers and was known as Jean-Baptiste Lesieur-Desaulniers. According to church records, the letter “l” was not used in the name in the first four generations.
Jean-Baptiste and Elisabeth had thirteen children. Large families were common in those days as the King of France, Louis XIII, paid a handsome bonus to families over ten children.
Eight of those thirteen* children died as adults within a nine week period during the winter of 1756.
Some information about the deaths:
Desaulniers child Birth Order Death Age Pierre 6th, 8 Jan 1756 at 32; Jean-Baptiste 1st, 16 Jan 1756 at 48; Etienne 13th, 26 Jan 1756 at 20; Charles 9th, 12 Feb 1756 at 31; Louis François 4th, 17 Feb 1756 at 41; Joseph 6th, 23 Feb 1756 at 37; M. Catherine 11th, 7 Mar 1756 at 27
NOTE: This record is missing from the register, unless the dates were confused, date give for him is actually his younger brother's funeral date: Etienne -Antoine 3rd, 26 Jan 1756 at 42;
In none of the funeral records is there mention of the cause of death. None of them appear to have received the last rites prior to death, which is usually mentioned in such records.
Marie Catherine does not appear to be part of the mystery, as she had just borne a child to her second husband Louis Millet on the same day. Deaths in childbirth were common.
This is quite a mystery, as a search of all other families living nearby at that time showed only a few deaths.
One possibility I considered: Joseph dit Coulombe, uncle to the deceased, had married Catherine Adouin, Indian princess, daughter of an Illinois chief. Smallpox was a scourge, especially among Indians at that time. Also, their son John Baptiste Lesieur-Coulombe and his wife Françoise died in 1756, on 4 and 5 Feb. But a report exists that at the time of their deaths a Coulombe was guarding an Indian village while the warriors were out hunting when an enemy tribe attacked and scalped young Coulombe. So their deaths may be a separate tragedy.
Finally, the seven Desaulniers males who died in 1756 collectively had 55 children, none of whom died in 1756. The possibility seems remote that eight members of one family living in scattered parts of the community could contract and die of smallpox without deaths reported among families and neighbors. Therefore the tragedy remains a mystery.
The twenty males who escaped this tragedy went on to spread the Desaulniers name far and wide. My research in “Les Vieilles Familles d’Yamachiche indicated 310 Desaulniers males in circulation around 1850. Today, in September 1984, our direct line extends to the 10th generation, a long path from Yamachiche of 1686.
