Biography

Susannah (Leedy) Long was born on 14 Dec 1783 in Broadfording, Washington County, Maryland, United States. She was the daughter of Abraham Leedy and Catherine {Studebaker} Long. She married her first cousin, John Bunn Long (1780-1855), on 27 Oct 1802 in Morrison Cove, Bedford, Pennsylvania. In 1816 Susannah and John moved with their 11 children by covered wagon 241 miles to the Leedy settlement near Ankenytown, Ohio. They brought cows with them from which they got milk and butter along the trip. They milked the cows in the morning, and milk was churned to butter as they traveled over the rough trails. Younger children rode in the wagon while the older children walked. When they arrived at their destination they built a cabin and cleared the land for a farm on their claim. The cabin was on the claim for three years when Federal Government issued John’s patent on 1 Jun 1819.[1]

Their family grew, and they built a larger log cabin with a huge loft that they filled with beds for their many children. They had a large table that seated 16 people. They cooked over the fireplace. They had plenty of hams, beef, wild turkey, and deer. Baking was done in a Dutch oven. Twice a week 12 to 14 loaves of bread were made to feed their large family. John traveled as a deacon with Brethren Preachers for the Ankenytown church. He was sometimes gone for a month at a time. The family had morning and evening worship where they read the Bible, prayed, and sang songs in Dutch. Before the Brethren church was built, church services were held in homes, and after the services, meals were shared.[2]

Susannah and John were the parents of 21 known children (most named on site). She passed away on 14 Jul 1849 in Ankenytown, Berlin Township, Knox County, Ohio. She is buried with her husband in Ridenour Cemetery, Berlin Township, Knox County, Ohio. [3]

They had over twenty children:
  1. John (1803-1886)
  2. Nancy (1804-1850)
  3. Abraham (1805-1891)
