Biography

  • From Solomon Leonard and some of His Descendants:

He married Sarah Chandler*, daughter of Roger chandler in 1670. He seems to have less migratory spirit than his brothers possessed, for all his life, excepting a few years of his childhood, was spent in Bridgewater.

* The Taunton Records show that ten acres at Cranberry Meadows. North Purchase. in right of the Court Grant to the three daughter's of Roger Chandler, was confirmed to John Leonard of Bridgewater, July 12, 1692.

He aquired more general knowledge than any other member of the family and held positions of more prominence in the town. He was evidently intelligent and much respected, often employed in fixing boundries of grants of lands, divisions, etc.

He died in the year 1699, leaving to his widow, five sons and one daughter - all of age but the latter - a large tract of valuable land extending into what is now the beautiful village of Bridgewater. A partition of his estate was made by Elihu Brett, Samuel Edson, David Perkins, John Washburn and Capt. Josiah Edson, Aug 30, 1701: which is recorded in Probate Records, Plymouth, Book 1, page 360.

His inventory was taken on 21 November 1699. He died intestate and his son Joseph was granted the letter of administration of his estate.[1]

In 1701, a distribution agreement was signed by all the heirs, the widow, Sarah, John Leonard (eldest son), Joseph Leonard, and Josiah Leonard. It also mentions Enoch and Sarah.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

My mistake. Not a will. A distribution of his estate..

"His inventory was taken on 21 November 1699. He died intestate and his son Joseph was granted the letter of administration of his estate.[1]

In 1701, a distribution agreement was signed by all the heirs, the widow, Sarah, John Leonard (eldest son), Joseph Leonard, and Josiah Leonard. It also mentions Enoch and Sarah.[2]"

No mention of Moses. This is from Wikitree.

What evidence is there that Moses is the son of John Leonard and Sarah Chandler Washburn? I see all of the other siblings mentioned in his will but not Moses.

So, where is this Will that you speak of?
The marriage record obtained from NEGHS states in the text "LEONARD, John (1643-1699) & Sarah ____ (not CHANDLER); ca 1676; Bridgewater {Bridgewater 235; Jennings 568; Hooper 6; Leonard (,2) 33, 37; Leonard Anc. 276; Morris-Flynt 54; Newton (,4) 41; Warner-Harrington 407". The father for Sarah may be Roger but it looks like Mary Simmonds has two husbands named Roger.

Leonard-2885 and Leonard-432 appear to represent the same person because: Reinstated proposed merge after removing parents of Leonard-2885 because they were born after the date shown in his profile.

Leonard-2885 and Leonard-432 do not represent the same person because: This John would need to be born much later (30-40 yrs), in order to fit with the parents/sibling shown.
Leonard-2885 and Leonard-432 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents, similar dates

Leonard-432 and Leonard-5151 appear to represent the same person because: From "Memorial: Genealogical, Historical, and Biographical, of Solomon Leonard, 1637, Duxbury and Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and some of His Descendants." By Manning Leonard, Southbridge, Mass. Press of Knapp, Peck & Thomson, Auburn N.Y. 1896 - Solomon Leonard's 2nd son was John Leonard born about 1645. Some confusion over his wife. John's children were John, Enoch, Moses, Josiah, Joseph, and Sarah. These two profiles are consistent with John and son Josiah. Josiah's 1st wife, Majoram Washburn are list in each profile.
