Biography

Hannah Leonard was born Oct 2, 1671 in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Captain James Leonard and Hannah (maiden name unknown) of Taunton. Hannah's father James was one of the Leonard brothers who started the first forge for iron work in America.[1]

Hannah married John Crane on Dec 13, 1686 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts when she was fifteen years old at a ceremony conducted by her Uncle Thomas.[2][3] John was born in Milton, Massachusetts on January 30, 1658-59 the son of Henry Crane who was born in England in 1625.[4]

John and Hannah settled in Taunton, Massachusetts where they had at least three children: Zipporah, born at Taunton, March 13, 1688-89; Gershom (1692-1787) and John who married Hannah Adams.

They later moved to Berkley where John died August 5, 1716 at the age of 57. Hannah died October 24, 1760, aged eighty-nine. They are both buried at Fox Cemetery, in Berkley, Bristol Massachusetts.[5]

Historical Data

In Richard William Cutter's book, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, Volume 4 (1913), p. 2065 he states that Hannah Leonard's father James (1643-1726) and his brother Thomas (1641-1713), both born in England came to America and started the "first forge for iron work in America. They built the Chartley Iron Works at the corner of South Worcester and West Main streets. Bog iron was dug along the banks of Stony Brook which flowed through the area where Chartley Pond is today. In 1872, William A. Sturdy built the first jewelry shop in town on this site. In 1911, a fire destroyed much of the building. The Sturdy family rebuilt and continued operating the jewelry company for many years in the Sturdy Brothers building".
