Biography

Kent (historic flag)
John Lennard was born in Kent, England.

John Lennard, as the eldest son, inherited his father's house and lands. He became a prosperous lawyer at Lincoln's Inn. Under Henry VIII he became a justice of the peace, prothonotary (clerk of court) of the common pleas. and was in the commission of the peace. Under Elizabeth I he was custos brevium (keeper of the writs) of the common pleas, and became sheriff of Kent.

In 1551 he bought the manor of Chevening, and after 1570 he possessed the manor of Knole, in Sevenoke, where he then mostly lived.

He married Elizabeth, daughter of William Harman, of Elham, in Crayford. He died in 1590 and was buried in Chevening under a sumptuous tomb of alabaster, with figures of himself and his wife.

At the time of his death he held the manors of Chevening, Chepsted, Appulderfield, Northsted, and Wickhurst. He left them all to his eldest son, Sampson. His youngest son, Samuel was knighted and settled in West Wickham. He also left five daughters.
