Charles Lewis was born February 25, 1730, in Gloucester County, Virginia, a son of John Lewis of "Warner Hall" Estate, and his first wife, Frances Fielding. His mother died October 27, 1731, in childbirth with his younger sister, Frances. [1] In 1732, his father married Mrs. Priscilla (Churchill) Carter, the widow of Robert Carter, who died May 6, 1732, at "Nomini Hall" in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Before 1767, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, John married Lucy Taliaferro, born at "Snow Creek" Spotsylvania County, Virginia, a daughter of John Taliaferro and Mary Catlett. Lucy Taliaferro is named in her father's Will dated April 30, 1744 and probate August 7, 1744. [2] Lucy is named as "Lucy Lewis" in her mother's estate. Mary, a widow, died in January, 1771 and her estate was bonded by her executors on March 21, 1771. Mary named her sons-in-law Charles Lewis and Joseph Jones as co-executors.
