Biography

David Livingston was born the youngest son of James Livingston, 1st Lord Livingston of Callendar, and his wife Marion.[1] Although his date of birth is not confirmed in source material he was likely born about 1440.

Trained by the church he was Rector of Ayr before 1477 when he appears as Curator to his brother, James Livingston, 2nd Lord Livingston of Callendar. His title is given as Master, likely an interpretation for Maestor. The Rectory of Ayr was a significant political position and previous incumbents had been served to the Provost of Lincluden and Chamberlain of Scotland. Livingston will follow roughly the same path.

He appears frequently as the Curator for his older brother, regarded as insane. He appeared when his brother was retoured as heir in 1479 and again, as Parson of Ayr, in 1483 and as Provost of Lincluden, in 1489.

At some point, prior to July 1483, he was made Provost of Lincluden and was keeper of the Privy Seal, a position he held until 1489. As such he made regular appearances in Parliament, appearing on behalf of the Clergy.[2]

He no longer appears on record after 1489 and it could be presumed he had died. There is no record of a marriage or children.
